Especially, calling a female "dude"?

I don't know, at my age, it kind of grates on my nerves.

When someone not close to me calls me "dude", my gut reaction is "shut the fuck up".

So, now I'll await the responses that say "But dude..."

I don't know what it is....reminds me of old people trying to channel Jeff Spicoli or something.

1. It's pretty common here in California.
Sort of a generic form of address/greeting.

5. I prefer it to "Chief",
usually used with a tone of false respect. Very popular in North Jersey. :P

26. And just WHAT is wrong with YO?????????
The term "Yo" is a greeting; a salutation, if you will. Its versatility makes it all that more popular, much in the same way "Aloha" can be used.

Okay....enough of the bullshit. "Yo Babe" is part of my South Jersey lexicon - people would think something's wrong if I change it now!!!!!

Hmmppff. Some Jersey girl YOU are!!!!!!!!!11!!!!!!!

:hi:

Did you get my Corona message last night?

14. I think so.
At least in my social circles, "dude" has always been a part of the vocabulary. It can also be an interjection.

My professors look at me funny when I get excited and say something like, "Dude! Did you see that new article by so-and-so?" :hide:

17. So, from this point on, we shall refer to philboy as "Pubes."
So as not to grate on his nerves.

23. I think it's all about tone
I have nothing against the term "dude", although it's not really something I say much (I am guilty of calling people "man", though- even occasionally slipping and saying it to a woman, but only to people with which I have a certain level of closeness). I tend to agree with you about it being annoying, although much of it has to do with tone. Most of the people who have used "dude" towards me in that way come across in a condescending manner, which is the main thing that I find grating about it. However, some people who use "dude" too much just come across as extremely laid-back and don't seem to mean anything rude by it, so they don't bother me as much; they are a minority, though.
