GPS questions
I had the pleasure of riding with PeaceNikki to the Milwaukee Drinking Liberally/DU mini-con last night. She's got a cool GPS system in her car that tells her exactly where to turn and all that fun jazz. Because I feel awkward about asking a person directly "how much is something like that?" but I don't have the same compunction about asking a group  I'd love to get one of those for my mom because she gets lost a lot -- I've priced a little bit online but my main question is do you need to subscribe to some sort of monthly service in order to use it or is it free to use once you pay for the device?

1. No subscription required
You can, however, subscribe for current traffic conditions that will allow you to avoid traffic jams.

2. I have a Navigon 2100
I paid $100 for it around Consumerism Holiday time. It has the maps loaded onto an SD card. No subscription is required. I can get lifetime traffic for an additional amount of money. I think after a year or two (I forget) I may have to pay for upgrades to the maps.

I am a bargain shopper. I got it for about $88 with shipping and a Buy.com coupon. No subscription required.

As you know, I LOOVE it. (except when it beeps at me on account of my lead foot) x(

:D

Here's the link to mine:
http://www.buy.com/prod/nextar-p3-portable-gps-navigation-system-with-mp3-player/q/loc/111/206577937.html

There are some VERY fancy models that run up to $300, but this one suits me just fine.

4. I shut the beeping off on mine.
California freeways have two speeds, 10 MPH or 85 MPH.

6. True
I think the CHP does not pull anyone over doing less than 95 because most of the time the freeway speed is 10 MPH. And anyone going less than 80 at the times when the freeways are moving, are in danger of getting killed.

7. I am very familiar with the concept
I lived in and spent the majority of my driving time in the Chicago area. The same rules apply.

Not so much in WI. Here, they are perfectly content going +/- 2 MPH the speed limit in the LEFT LANE. And, I am convinced that they don't teach the concept of merging onto a freeway in driver's ed in Wisconsin. x(

8. When I lived in MN, we used to road trip to Chicago a lot
It amazed me that upon crossing the Wisconsin/Illinois state line how all the cars would speed up between 15-20 MPH.

9. That is because of the laws for speeding tickets issued in WI
If you're out-of-state, your "bond" amount is the full amount of the ticket. You pay immedietly. 90% won't come back to court to get reduced or thrown out.

They did that to get the IL summer home folk.

10. I felt the same way traveling from IA to MN.
You could tell when the speed limit went from 65 to 70!

12. I got a Garmin as a Christmas gift
I can get lost backing out of my driveway... Now with the Garmin, I can get lost in Milwaukee and find myself heading to Green Bay. x(

Seriously, I rely on it and can't read maps and printouts when it's cold, raining, dark and there's a lot of traffic like in Chicago.

13. Lizzie, PM me what part of the area you're moving to
and be sure to come over to the WI folder for ideas. We're, in my own humble opinion, a remarkably friendly lot here :)

14. I will
I desperately want to find a job, especially one in Milwaukee. I felt more at home in that city than I've felt in Columbus in years...

:)
