<snip>Sixteen months ago, Mr. Walker, a 50-year-old Longview native and former fishing guide, bought a 2007 Shelby Mustang GT 500 – the one armed with a supercharged 500-horsepower, 5.4-liter V-8 that occupies every inch of space under the hood.
<snip>That respect cost him roughly $20,000 and included a bigger supercharger with twice as much boost, a huge intake system, more efficient exhaust, lots of tweaks to the computer and other modifications.
The result: Mr. Walker transformed his already stout 'Stang into probably the most powerful street car I've ever been in.
In fact, with an estimated 750 to 775 horsepower at the rear wheels (which computes to nearly 900 at the flywheel), the savage Mustang has vastly more power than the wild new ZR-1 Corvette, an F430 Ferrari, Turbo Porsche, a Viper or any Lamborghini. Only a few ultra-exotics can match the output from his car's stock Ford block.
<snip>Wheelspin is Mr. Walker's biggest challenge and irritation. The engine in the GT 500 blasts the rear tires so violently – and these are 20-inch, 285-width Nitto 555s – that that they sometimes slip on the wheels, slinging counterweights off and becoming instantly unbalanced.
"In the instruction manual for the supercharger, the last page says traction will be a problem," Mr. Walker said. "They weren't kidding."
