1. That's not even close to RATM. Not even close.
Musical style entirely different, for one thing.

The other difference is that RATM is interesting to listen to.

3. lol
rage was also a product of the early nineties musical movement. (when rock had a chance) these guys are products of hip hop. and quite honestly their lyrics are just as biting and poignant. (people over the age of forty won't get it though....I mean they don't even sing for chrisssakes.)

8. People over the age of 40 won't get it? How arrogantly ignorant.

9. why?
typically people over forty don't "get" hip hop.

If you found that less interesting it may be because you don't "get" hip hop.

And before you go and start chanting ageism know that I am significantly closer to 40 than 20. Some people (those over 40 didn't grow up with the pervasive influence of Hip Hop in every aspect of culture) simply will never "get" hip hop.

The only reason Rage hit the way they did was because of the sound that accompanied Zach's lyrics. C'mon (slammin' like shaquile?) Zach was far from being, stylistically, one of the "Great" rappers but the message an fury of the musuc are what made Zach great.

And so yes I will stick by my statement....

And yes I think Geologic of the Blue Scholars is a better lyricist than Zach and I think this music comes at a more politically important time than Rage did. Therefore I have no problem saying that these guys are a decent successor to Rage.

11. wow...
I work 70 plus a week. I have excellent manners. I don't however "get" new wave music. Nor do I "get" folk music or anything by Elvis.

There are such things as generational gaps. Somethings I just don't "get". My 10 year insists on wearing his baseball caps with a flat brim. I can't stand it. I think it looks weird....dare I say, "I don't get it."

Wo/man lighten up.

15. It was my attempt to show you how ridiculous and ignorant such monolithism is.
And especially how truly non-dialogical such ignorant statements are.

Statements like "Oh, you don't like this? That's just because of your age/race/gender/education/whatever, you don't 'get' it" are statements made by people who have no interest in dialog on any real level. It utterly shuts the other person down, thus ending dialog. And it's obnoxious.

16. wow
I would argue that to ignore such facts as that there are generational differences in taste of music is silly. and the fact that most who view Zach as the best rapper don't really know rap.

17. Of course there are generational differences in musical tastes.
But admitting to and adjusting for that truth is a million miles away from your utterly dismissing entire generations' (or any demographic's) abilities to "get" something.

And most people only have generational differences because of the way the music industry generates an artificial "musical product" reality. I have less in common, musically, with my generation than I do with the generations preceding and following it, because I've never cared about what is popular - I've always liked the music that I like, for the reason that I like it. I've never liked music because the music industry and/or radio tells me that I like it. Which latter method is about how 99% of the American public digests their musical product (as well as films, books, TV shows, and so forth).

I strive go beyond what the industry tells me to like, and meet art on my own terms; and thus, if I dismiss an artistic work, I dismiss based on its own merits, not on whether it fits my generation, or whether I 'get' it. I can also appreciate the artistic integrity of a work of art, even if I don't particularly care for it or want to watch/listen/hang it on my wall.

And I'm not the only one.

And it's the truth of those last two paragraphs that you so heinously and ridiculously dismissed with your monolithic statement about no one over 40 being able to 'get' it.

To say so is a lie, and, as I said before, merely a cheap and unthoughtful ploy to shut down dialog.

20. You said "people over the age of forty won't get it though".
That's as much of a dismissing of an entire demographic as is possible.

Not any different, really, then "women can't get science" or "black people can't get math".

If you can't see that, then you need to... well, learn how to see that.

Edited on Sun Apr-20-08 08:30 PM by dawgman
well in this format but I thought the follow up line (they don't even sing for crissakes) was a dead give away. C'est la vie. Seriously though. If you try to find a way to be offended you probably will be.

Once again. Lighten up wo/man.

25. "they don't even sing for crissakes" was also a dismissive line,
to suggest that "old" people have some kind of myopic vision of music being only that with sung lyrics.

A sarcasm smiley or other marker - or physically separating it with white space from the surrounding material - would have been helpful if you intended for that to be taken as a tongue-in-cheek comment.

And I do not need to lighten up; you need to be more careful with language. How we use language is critically important, since it is the only vehicle for communication on a non-strictly-emotional, non-strictly-symbolic level that we humans have.

Thank you for finally clarifying your intent with the "over 40" line. Would have been much easier had you said so in the beginning, but now that I know you were joking, you can ignore my other comments.

33. No, I don't reach. I read what is written.
It is not my fault that your comment was not clearly sarcastic. I can only assume that what I read is what you meant. Hence, my other comment that the way we use language is critically important. We can't write shit, and then when people call us on it tell them to just "lighten up".

Notice the other person who responded to your over 40 comment - he, also, took it at face value, and assumed you meant it the way you said it.

You ask "reach much?" I ask, "Do you even listen to what people are saying to you? Do you even care?"

You continue to dismiss my comments.

To tell someone to "lighten up" is another beautifully perfect way to end a dialog, and dismiss a person's concerns.

13. I can appreciate the style, talent and sentiment
and I'm glad that there's another artist out there with a mentality like that. However, there is no "taking the place of" Rage Against the Machine. Shit, they shut down Wall Street AND they rock...hard. And Morello bills with the gods.
