why oh why didn't I marry a musician?
I adore musicians. Well, those who play certain kinds of music. But particularly those who exhibit a joie de vivre that comes with doing something that brings people pleasure.

Why didn't I know this before I married an accountant?

Think of all those years I wasted!

And then when the accountant and I had enough of each other thank you very much, my musician friends were all snapped up by others.

Live, learn, and regret.

1. Lucy Van Pelt wrote to 'Dear Agnes'
"I'm in love with a man who doesn't even know I'm alive. All he ever thinks about is his stupid ol' piano and that stupid ol' Beethoven."

Dear Agnes responded, "Never fall in love with a musician."

:hi:

2. I can tell you all the horrible things about living with a musician.
I married one, so I know. Don't get me wrong, there are great and wonderful things, but there are also downsides.

The grass is never really greener.

It's about finding someone that you love for them, loves you back for you, and someone you can't even imagine living without.

3. Because you have brains?
I worked at Berklee College of music for years and dated half the faculty and a smaller proportion of the students. These people... they live in an odd world. They could not play or sing or write without inspiration, seriously, and inspiration takes all forms. The marriages don't last. MHO.

4. Actually that great guy will be someone you never pay attention to.
He'll be somebody with a boring job and a boring life, but you won't pay attention to him, and neither will anybody else, because he's boring.

I married a guitarist. He's still having fun working in the film & TV industry and I get to hold down the real job with benefits.

9. I'm both an accountant and muscian....
Here's a song I wrote for someone I love:

Debits on the left
Credits on the right
Let's not depreciate our assets honey
I don't want to fight

You turn me on like no other
When you work that Excel spreadsheet
And when you put that pen to paper
No one has you beat

So take my hand and show me
Your revenue recognition policy
And I will be a happy man
As we punch the calculator with glee

12. My SO is a musician
And I love him dearly. But there are many downsides to daily life with a musician: no concept of time, working weekend nights, endless rehearsing, and head in the clouds all of the time.

Sometimes an accountant seems pretty darn appealing....:D

15. Perhaps you should consider a part-time musician?
For example, among the fine gentlemen in my band (www.thevibetribe.net, available for weddings, private parties, corporate events, etc.), we have a programmer, a realtor, a public relations officer for a bank, and a teacher (that one is me...admittedly, I'm a music teacher, but still...). Yes, there are gigs on the weekends (we're booked almost to the end of the year), but the financial rewards make it worthwhile. And we're all able to do most of our part-learning away from rehearsal, so full rehearsals don't take up too much time. (Hell, I often learn tunes in the car while driving to and from work.)

That's not the kind of musician I know. My best friends for many years were jazz musicians. Nearly always with a day job -- a career. But with that especially interesting joyful spirit that musicians have.

At least an accountant isn't playing Scotland the Brave in the basement at 6am. It registers on the Richter scale. "Divorce? Never. Murder ....?"

One who knows how to play the bagpipes but doesn't.

Why do Bagpipe players march so fast?

To get away from the noise...

What's the difference between a Chainsaw and a Bagpipe?

You could tune a chainsaw if you had to...
