I have sidewalk rage.
Edited on Sat Apr-26-08 09:21 PM by JanMichael
There's a school near me that has a parking lot where staff, students and teachers, shoot right out - over and through a pedestrian sidewalk and onto the street. Very little stopping or slowing (there are a few conscientious folks who stop - bless their lonely hearts) even when folks (me with a dog) walking on the sidewalk are passing in front of the exit.

At times I've yelled at them, pointed at the sidewalk, and screamed "THIS IS A SIDEWALK YOU STUPID FUCK!". They typically look dumbfounded and shocked regardless of age or sex - but they usually stop. At least 60% of the time the driver is chatting on a cell phone and just rolling through onto the street - oblivious to the sidewalk or people on it. It took me two years to get frustrated enough at their complete lack of social skills to snap.

Anyway the local law here is that there is a presumed yield when exiting a parking lot. That includes yielding to pedestrians on the sidewalk.

Thus my rage.

1. Drivers get pissed at me when I stop for pedestrians...
There are some really scary people operating vehicles these days. :(

5. Scary stuff, eh? People angry because you're paying attention.
Amazing and just a tad scary.

2. A big step toward pollution reduction would be execution of drivers on cell phones.
If they have that little regard for life, they should be terminated immediately.

It's no different than drunk driving.

3. If not for jail I'd smash their windscreen (windshied) w/bat.
Since they are all made of safety glass now it'd just scare the shit out of the dumbfucks who can't stop or yield.

Nobody hurt just scared stiff.

4. Doing so should not only be legal, but should be encouraged.

every time you you did that.

That bounce can be pretty radical.

Now don't get violent. It won't help you and it won't stop them. Perhaps you could petition the local government to 1) patrol there more often and enforce the speed limit and 2) lower the speed limit to 15 (if it isn't already) and put up larger speed limit signs. Our local university has all that, and it's strictly enforced, and woe betide the unwary soul who goes too fast down through there. The students own those roads, and it's understood that they can step out in front and you better be going slow enough to stop on a dime when they do. I'm sorry your town doesn't protect pedestrians better. Most of America is unfriendly to pedestrians and bikers (Denver was a great town to be a biker, when I was a kid), and it sucks.

11. A modest solution...

Behold the spring-loaded window center punch. Effectively field-deployed by fire, rescue and EMS for over 40 years. Will reduce safety glass to rubble in less than 2 seconds with one press of a button. For when you haven't got time to fuck with windshields.

13. Wow
A perfect tool, perfectly suited to just one purpose. It's too bad I so seldom have a need to smash out a windshield, because it sounds like fun!

14. They're actually really cheap...
that one was like $8 from a fire-supply website. I keep one in my backpack, it's useful for getting out of the car from the inside too in the case of submersion or crash. Never used it...almost did.

I was at work and some guy left his kid and dog in a closed truck in the parking lot in July and after about 15 minutes I was about to go outside to "ventilate" his vehicle for him, but he came back before I got the chance.

9. justified rage
I live next to a highschool and I have to avoid it altogether when I walk, especially when school lets out. Maybe they wouldn't be so inconsiderate if they were thinking of the REST of everyone but some of them seem to think they're the only people in the world, or the only ones going anywhere anyway.

15. Public Service Announcement!
For all reading this post, remember this next time you wonder why a police officer pulls over and cites someone who "wasn't doing anything wrong," who was only driving and trying to live their lives. :)

For the OP: I would contact directly (in writing, and keep a copy) the law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction over this area and ask for enforcement and patrol checks. I would also mention that "stop" signs should be erected if they aren't there already, as the lack of them poses a safety hazard. Be advised as well that pedestrians have a duty to protect their own safety (meaning not darting out in front of moving traffic), which it does not sound like you are doing, but keep that in mind when you lodge your issues, which you should lodge because it sounds like a serious safety hazard and lack of controls/enforcement.

16. I always make sure cars know when I have the right of way
that I am going to take my right of way as a pedestrian, and thank god I'm tall so people notice me pretty fast. :P

The people who usually ignore pedestrians tend to be middle aged middle class women on their cell phones and business men in luxury cars.

17. Call the police and ask them to issue several warnings for failing to stop -
I assume there is a STOP sign there - and this should take care of this.

18. No stop sign but there's a post that appears to have held one.
Doesn't matter anyway as the law states quite clearly that there's a presumption that the exiting cars must yield.

That said I'm going to politely asked their facilities manager to deal with it. I'll give them 30 days to get their shit together before requesting a city/police solution.
