My cousin drove through town yesterday, stopped to visit,
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 08:11 PM by mycritters2
and gave the beagle one of these:

It's a beef bone filled with peanut butter. Funny thing No. 1: She bought the one filled with peanut butter rather than beef or chicken so it (yes, the cow's bone) would count as "vegetarian".

So she gives it to the beagle, and I think the beagle, who can be really hyper, might actually calm down, curl up with this, and just have a nice, quiet chew. But no!! Getting ALL of the peanut butter out of that damn bone has become the beagle's PROJECT! She doesn't want to go out, doesn't eat, doesn't rest for a minute! I don't know what time she finally came to bed last night. She MUST get the peanut butter out of that bone! And some of it she can barely reach with her tongue. No matter. She is DRIVEN!!

Beagles.

1. I had a beagle/springer spaniel mix when I was growing up.
She totally spoiled me for all other dogs. She was the bestest doggy evah.

I remember when I had to put her down (her hips had given out).

5. Yep. Except when my relatives come to visit.
She eats Natural Life, Natural Balance or Nature's Recipe Vegetarian Dog Food, and, for treats, either Mr. Barky's Vegetarian Dog Treats, Mr. Puglsy's Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits, or Sam's Yams Veggie Rawhide. Along with lots of fresh fruits and veggies (she LOVES apples and tomatoes!). She's allergic to eggs, which are lurking in lots of meat dog foods, and dogs can be prefectly healthy without meat. And perfectly happy. In fact, I think it's telling that what interests her about the bone is the peanut butter. The bone is just the peanut butter container.

6. Uh oh!
I hope you don't get flamed for posting that your dog is a vegetarian. :(

Dietary alergies are a total pain in the ass to avoid. It sounds to me like you're doing a great job raising her, and she sounds very happy on her vegetarian diet. Good for both of you.

7. I'm used to it. Recently got barked at by a pet supply store
manager, for asking if he carried vegetarian dog food. I have to order it online, because the local pet places all react in horror when I ask about it...even when I ask them to order it so I can buy from them rather than sending money out of town. My vet will sell me the prescription kind, but admitted it's basically the same as the Nature's Recipe OTC veg food.

Yeah, she's a happy pup. It occurred to me today that she's not so much interested in the bone as the peanut butter. If it were a Kong with peanut butter in it, she'd be just as interested. She has no idea that I'm abusing her by depriving her of animal products. And she's doing her part to slow global warming!

9. Oh that's funny
We had a couple with a beagle visiting one time with a group of people at a vacation house in the San Juan Islands. All the beagle wanted to do was get out of the house and go to the coffee shop. We kept him in as much as possible, but if one person made a mistake and left a door open even an INCH, the beagle would figure out how to open it and head to the coffee shop again (not sure why that was the destination, but maybe because it was the closest place where there were people outside?)
