It does make one appreciate the times when others surprise you, though.

9. I find that by being a pessimist, I end up being proven right, or being pleasantly surprised.
So that works pretty well most of the time. :)

10. Which is why I'm single and live with cats
;-)

Yeah, I've been disappointed more and more frequently by people lately-both here and in "real life". Our society as a whole is colder and more selfish than it once was, and personal attacks are now viewed as "sport" with many people. There's also a severe lack of intellectual curiosity out there. I'm often asked just why I'm still single; the honest answer is that I've never met anyone that I wanted to spend a significant portion of my life with. I'm unwilling to "settle" just to avoid being alone. Down here we are overwhelmed with Baptist Bible thumpers, Libertarians and bigoted republicans. Sign me up for "none of the above". :-(

14. people are disappointed because we disappoint ourselves
and our own self disappointment causes us to project that disappointment onto others. that's probably not correct, but it sounds good.

17. In general people suck, which is what make the good ones that much more special
If all people were great, than the good ones would be nothing special.

23. Here's my take:
"People" aren't disappointing, it is you who feel disappointed in them and therefore, it is you who are ultimately responsible for your own emotional reaction to them.

They're just doing their own thing, in some cases, being incredibly insensitive or unconscious.

It is your judgment about them that causes the emotional stress, disappointment, or whatever. The stress comes from resisting the present moment, of whatever is "showing up".

Nobody MAKES you feel disappointed in them. They're not holding a gun to your head saying, "Feel disappointed in me, dammit!" It doesn't quite work that way.

I think we are all too often willing to give away our own power by viewing other people as being responsible for our emotional reactions.

Bottom line: You are responsible for what you feel, not other people.

Just sayin'.

That said, however, I'm sorry you're bummin'.

disappointed or angry or contempt?

30. No, of course not. I feel sad, mostly.
What I'm saying is that I don't hold them responsible for what I am feeling.

Furthermore, I try to see a very clear distinction between their behaviour, attitudes or whatever and the people themselves.

There are various levels of consciousness and those people we label as "bigots" are manifesting levels of consciousness which don't understanding the connection we all share.

The more of us who awaken to the awareness that we are truly all ONE, the more light we will bring to the planet.

I only read the OP, not the whole thread...I thought Lioness was talking in general terms of the universal tendency of people to disappoint at times...I didn't realize the discussion was about something specific...

And I'm not just basing that on the actions of one person.

33. Agreed.
I've often been told I expect too much out of people, though.

A little honesty, once in awhile, wouldn't hurt though...
if you know what I mean (?).
