2. Almost my favorite - Hagen's Watch from Gotterdammerung, sung by Salminen.
Because, let's be honest, ain't no one what can sing Hagen better than Matti Salminen.

His perfection and godlike voice are quite evident in this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV43HVl59c0&feature=related

I had the pleasure of seeing him in a couple performances of Gotterdammerung at the Met. Fucking amazing.

The clip I'd really like to show is the calling of Gibichungs, but I can't find it on youtube, except as sung by a drippy jackass in some idiotic 1970s "modern" setting.

Standing through 18 hours of the Ring is worth it just for that moment that Salminen comes out and starts singing "hoiho, hoihoho..."

One of the most amazing moments in my musical experience.

I mean, Jesus Christ - listen to that voice!!

God!!

I'm glad you enjoyed it - he has an amazing voice.

Too bad others here are ignoring it.

4. And of course, anyone who doesn't have "Einstein on the Beach" is a musical loser
Edited on Sun May-04-08 05:29 PM by Rabrrrrrr
with unrefined, narrow tastes.

Sadly, there are no real videos of the performances, but here is a little clip that has some footage from the opera, starting at the 3:00 mark.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjtVOwz86IU&feature=related

And then here is the Philip Glass Ensemble playing Train/Spaceship:

Pt. 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dl0BSh7RXPc&feature=related

Pt. 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0SgFg7OstI&feature=related

Another highlight of my life was seeing Einstein on the Beach in performance, with the ensemble and many of the original dancers (it was the 1992 touring version of Einstein).

It was a "HOLY SHIT!!" kind of evening - I'd loved the music for 8 years by that point; seeing it performed - my God, what stamina it takes from the performers. Amazing.

7. I haven't seen that one
but since I am a big Carmen fan, I've seen quite some performances. Best ones in Bregenz at the Lake Constance and in Verona, Italy.

11. Just a great performance in my books
Tarja Turenen the Finnish Goddess of Metal (former Nightwish lead singer) doing an awesome job on "Ave Maria" (traditional take). Seriously give it a look she is talented and classically trained.

http://www.youtube.com/v/O_vMEvcPDGs&hl=en

This is definitely not "opera" but here is Nightwish doing "Phantom of the Opera". Operatic metal rules!!!

Cheers ;p

I think this performance is on a par with Tito Gobbi's or Bruno Pola's.

Handel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWRHdTCJyyA

Countertenor Andreas Scholl singing Dove Sei in Act I of Rodelinda in Glyndebourne in 1990, conducted by William Christie.
'Tis said it was Handel's favourite of all his arias.

And Mozart:

Kurt Moll as the Commendatore, Samuel Ramey as the Don and Ferrucio Furanetto as Leporello in the doom scene of Don Giovanni.
