I've seen Iron Man.
There are two types of people who watch super hero movies- the first type go simply for the enjoyment of a good but impossible tale of a man or woman who has the strength and power to make wrong things right. They go to see cool costumes, strange super powers, loud, noisy fights, and (usually) a lot of guns, explosions, and very fast cars. They have a chance to sit in the dark for a couple hours and be entertained by a story they know will never come true.

They simply don't understand.

The rest of us go because we've been reading comic books all our lives. We've steeped ourselves in the lore of Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, The Fantastic 4, The X-Men, and now Iron Man. These heroes have lived inside our skulls for years, and we know every storyline they've ever lived. We know every hidden nuance of every character in the comic book world. We're familiar enough with what's happening that we can often guess what's going to happen next. For us, it's not just a movie. For us, it's real.

Iron Man was perfect. Granted, they rewrote his story a bit, but the comic writers do that themselves from time to time anyway- they update things to keep pace with the real world. Not a problem! The guts of the tale are still there, and that's the important thing. The colored drawings we've gazed at for all these years have suddenly come to fantastic life, and it's a fulfillment of a lifetime of mental imagery.

If it's done wrong (I.E. the first Hulk flick) everyone knows it's trash and it slinks off to die. If it's done right it brings whole worlds to life for the choice few who have interested themselves in the richness of the comic book fantasy world.

There was humor here. There was intelligence. There was a familiarity with old characters. There were also cool costumes, strange super powers, loud, noisy fights, a lot of guns, explosions, and very fast cars. There was enough in this movie to satisfy the first type of movie watchers, and there was more than enough to make an old comic book addict like me a supremely happy man.

I've seen both Tony Stark and Iron Man come to life the way I'd hoped they would.

Life is good.

1. My dear Prisoner_Number_Six!
I'm so glad you got to go, and that you enjoyed it!

It is a wonderful thing when the movie-makers manage to fulfill our dreams about the things we've read...

I'm so happy for you, sweetie!

2. Preach on, brother!
I'm one of the dozen or so people nationwide who actually enjoyed seeing Daredevil in the theater! All by itself, the scene in which the dubiously Irish Bullseye fought and skewered the dubiously perky Elektra made up for the rest of the film's considerable shortcomings. "But me, I'm magic." Magic indeed!

I'd been seeing that sequence in my head for about 20 years, and to have it realized onscreen effectively was the culmination of those two decades of silent, internal musings re: "wouldn't that be cool?"

Even Ang Lee's not so incredible Hulk was ultimately worthwhile IMO, simply because of the delightful scene in the desert in which Hulk fights those Abrams tanks, and wins! Straight from the pages!

Hell, I even watched most of FF2 tonight, just because I like the Torch/Surfer chase scene so much!

Naysayers, get thee (the collective "thee") behind me!

5. They're remaking The Hulk, BTW.
They had a trailer at the theater today. It'll be out some time this summer. Looks like this time they may just get it right.

Hope springs eternal.

10. If I heard correctly, it's a pure remake!
That is "let's remake it so that we can forget the other one." Kind of like Batman Begins, after which we can (thankfully) forget all of the previous films!

I watched a trailer on IMDB and was pretty optimistic afterwards, and I even like the way that they redesigned the Abomination. We'll see how it turns out...

11. I LOVED Daredevil!
He is part of my Holy Trinity- Spiderman, Iron Man, and Daredevil. (I was madly in love with Frank Miller's Elektra series, also.)

I have the DVD and watch it occasionally- it shows the human side of crime fighting. Besides, as you said, Bullseye was WAY bad.

The Silver Surfer was also one I wanted to see on the big screen, and I think they managed to do a pretty good job of it in FF2.

All my dreams are coming true. :yourock:

3. How did stark manage to fit a jet engine into the 1/2 inch sole of his boot?
Iron Man has always been one of my favorite titles but that little detail has always bugged me. (Which is weird because palm mounted "repulsers" etc... don't phase me at all.)

9. You're forgetting the middle ground.
There are geeks who know the comics in general, and know the characters well enough to understand them ahead of time... but who haven't read all the comics and don't know all the storylines. :P
