Does anyone else experience bad intestinal pain after long flights?
Edited on Thu May-08-08 01:42 PM by Flaxbee
the last few times I've flown to Russia thru Germany (from Atlanta, so about a 9-10 hour flight to Frankfurt, then a few more hours into St. Petersburg) I end up with debilitating intestinal pain for about an hour after we've landed. My eardrums are fine, but it's like the pressure in my guts hasn't regulated. It is horrible. Doesn't happen on shorter flights in the US, or shorter flights in Europe -- just seems that anything beyond 6 hours (or maybe it's the elevation, since longer flights are usually flying at higher altitudes) is torture.

Anyone else have this problem? I'm fine after an hour, but in the meantime it's awful, and NOTHING helps. So I know it's just my body regulating itself but am I the only one?

edited b/c I forgot to finish a sentence

1. No pain, but I end up constipated after flying
I think part of the constipation is the fact that flying dehydrates a person.

2. that makes sense - flights just suck all the moisture out of a person. My problem seems bizarre
and I don't see anyone else doubled over in pain in the customs lines.. makes me wonder if something is wrong that I should ask a dr. about. Or not.

3. I would certainly see a doctor for it.
If nothing else, just to rule out anything serious.

4. the stupid thing is, I keep meaning to ask my dad, who is a retired
doctor, but everytime we get on the phone we blab about a million other things and I forget. I usually forget about it anyway, but have traveled a little more recently.

I'll make a note to self. Thanks, KW

5. Do you drink lots of fluids?
For a flight that long, pick up several litre bottles of water, before boards, so that you have a continuous supply of water.

6. yeah - lots and lots and LOTS of water - plain, still, flat water, nothing
with any carbonation. I'm fine before the flights, and in-flight, but within about 10 minutes of landing until about an hour or so after, I can hardly stand up without being in a lot of distress (makes the TSA people suspicious, too). Sitting is fine, standing is not.

Weird.

7. Hey Flaxee
I think it is the fault of the person that booked those for you, blame him!!

I wonder if it is the Lufthansa food???

Flying shouldnt affect the 'intestinal' area, unless you eat something not so good......

of Frankfort. I'm kinda glad to be flying Lufthansa. They'll see to it to get my bag all the way to Malpense or "someone vill be shot!"

17. Well, I'm departing from Boston's Logan Airport at 4:15 Sat. afternoon.
arriving in Frankfort at 5:20 am. It seems you had me out of JFK. When I'm traveling alone to Europe, I usually go out of Boston cuz my daughter can drop me/pick me up at the airport. It's a hassle getting to JFK from New Haven, but less so with a buddy along to share the ride costs.

21. Hey, if coach is overbooked I'll get there 2 hours ahead of flight time.
Will that do it? Or should I call ahead? My flight was booked by a travel agency...

We fly from DFW to London on Saturday, then back to DFW from Paris on the 26th. I usually don't have problems, but now that I've read your post I may talk myself into it!

13. And this line in this article
Abstract

Dilatation of the cecum can precipitate its rotation, resulting in a volvulus in individuals who have a mobile cecum. Conditions associated with increased intestinal gas can put predisposed patients at increased risk for cecal volvulus. Drop in the cabin pressure during air travel may cause up to a 30% gas expansion, which might result in cecal dilatation

16. oh my god, I'm going to have to cry out on the next flight:
"Oh no, not cecal volvulus again!"

Sounds terrible, and nasty at the same time. I'll have to do some reading - thank you for the links!
