Honestly, I don't think it is indecent as many swim suits cover less, but it is not a prom dress.

Item #1 is that no more than one inch of the midsection may be shown.

There's also stuff about wearing underwear, not having sheer material over private areas, proper footwear, and so on.

7. I'm conflicted on this one
In support of the school: They did have a dress code established before the prom took place, and she did violate it.

In support of the kid: As an amateur designer myself, I think it's impressive that she designed and made the dress herself, even if it wasn't appropriate for the prom. It was a bit tacky, but the funny thing is, it wouldn't be out of place on a Hollywood red carpet. I think she has a future in fashion design.

And--WTF--police? Whatever happened to "go home and change and come back and we'll let you in"? If she was making that big of a fuss, call hotel security or beefy chaperones to get her out of there, not the f'in' police. Sheesh.

31. I don't get the thrill with dressing like a cheap, self-loathing whore
Edited on Mon May-12-08 11:28 AM by Rabrrrrrr
Not only is the dress inappropriate, it's ugly as shit - and would probably look ugly as shit on anyone.

All that dress says is "Look at me! I'm really fucking stupid, and I let the media dictate to me that looking like a cheap whore is the 'in' thing and that's it more important to party with my friends and drink and be an idiot than it is to think and read and I'd rather be pregnant and prison at 17 than have a life".

And the saddest part is, there's probably 10 percent of the population who look at that and think, "I don't see no problem with that".

"They didn't give me any options - either go home or to prison" - yeah, "no options" at all. :eyes: Fucking idiot.

Though I do agree she should have gotten her money back.

Yeah, it's tasteless, but let's be honest. At my school the prom was called "get fucked night" by the students. Even if that was an overstatement, it was definitely "get drunk night." So why pretend it is a more graceful event than it is.

I suppose they think bustier or camisole type top and a diaphanous floor length skirt would have been sent completely non-sexual signals. She really just stripped away the bullshit if you ask me.

I'm kind of surprised she thought she'd get away with it though. Proms pretty much follow a formula without much room for deviation.

I hear you on dress codes - we couldn't wear mini-skirts at my school. In protest all us cheerleaders wore them on the same day - all the other cheerleaders got sent home but since I was 'head' cheerleader I ended up w/in school suspension and had to eat lunch w/the Principal every day for a week (I think he just liked to see me in my mini-skirt! :wow:)

59. I think she should sue to abolish the dress code...
and to get her money back. the rules are bullshit. Judgement should only be passed in the court room. That is a key to a well functioning democracy. Individual citizens don't have the right to pass judgement. Why do we treat teenagers like we ourselves never were teenagers? It's a bit hypocritical in my opinion.

64. Needs to go through the administrative process before it enters a courtroom
The issue of a dress code belongs in front of the School Board, once that fails (and it will) THEN it should go in front of the Courts. Of course then the girl will be either in college or out in the work force with a new set of rules to be followed (wonder what her boss would think of that dress???).

55. Inappropriate? Yes. BUT
The idea that a woman who shows her body is a hooker, pole dancer, self loathing, whoreish, too stupid to use a condom, etc is just degrading and wrong. Not that being a dancer, or even a sex professional has to be degrading, but that's how it's being used here.

There is a total hypocrisy overflow in the idea that a woman has no self confidence if she.... doesn't cover up her body. I'd never wear it, I think it's in poor taste, and probably not age appropriate, but could we save the sexist value judgments for the nasty voice in the back of some of your heads please? I'd really appreciate it.

84. true dat
We are in an era of ridiculous, hyper/hypocritical prudishness that is not serving young people of either gender well.

63. I'm normally the first one to speak out against school dress codes... but this wasn't just in school
this was a private event that the school was holding.

Although getting the police involved... that's more than just a bit much.

65. The handcuff thing does sound a little kinky, though.
Part of the prom costume?

76. Where was her mom?
I hate that her big prom night was ruined. Her mom should have advised her that it was inappropriate for the occasion. She is such a beautiful girl.

83. ok
she is 17
she DID NOT MAKE THE DRESS
it was custom made for her

WHERE THE FUCK WAS HER MOM????

I believe she got exactly what she wanted..... media attention

there is no reason

NONE a 17 year old girl should wear this dress to a prom
that has a dress code

and then be surprised

she can not go in

she KNEW she wasn't getting in

yeah she was comfortable in her body yadda yadda yadda

but why did she not have to follow the rules????
every on else did

lost

sorry

I am a liberal but this was a blatant attempt at notoriety

86. that dress was too skimpy for prom
Edited on Mon May-12-08 10:37 PM by Miss Carly
there was a dress code and she violated it, she was wearing next to nothing, and it doesn't even look like a prom dress, it looks like a bathing suit. If I had been her mother I would have been mad, spent all that money on a "custom made prom dress", all they had to do is take 2 pieces of fabric and do the same thing at home.

87. that dress was inappropriate imo and there was a dress code. If she wants to wear that
out so much i'm sure she could go to a club or to a restaurant of party.
