DU Women - Question re: Haircuts (not perm, not color, not style)
When you get a haircut - not perm, not style, not color, not highlights, etc, just a straight plain haircut - what does it cost without tip?

Please tell me the type of place you get it done. Is it a neighborhood shop like Truvy's (see "Steel Magnolias")? Supercuts or Fantastic Sam's or Hair Cuttery? A nice stylist place? Or a full-service spa?

I want to see if I have been spending too much. This isn't scientific, but it'll help.

Thanks

1. Jeez, can't really help. I get the whole color, highlights thing
done when I go. It's $175 for cut, color and highlights. Don't know the breakdown.

And, this is a pretty 'posh' salon. Not a chain.

3. Hairy's Hair Bar, Milwaukee, $30-$40.
It's a hair place that has a full-service salon attached. Not quite Truvy's, as most of the stylists are extensively tattooed/pierced/mohawked/etc. (I should add: I am not, and that is not a problem.)

26.00 for haircut. Shoulder length hair. Not a fancy salon by any means.

9. I have the same hairdresser all the time I ask for him by name.
Edited on Wed May-14-08 03:52 PM by auntAgonist
I had a different lady doing my hair but I saw Michael doing another woman's hair and the way he worked, talked to her and the end result was enough to make me ask for an appointment with him.
He is really good. I like the salon hours too. I can get an appointment for a sunday afternoon if I need to.

Here is the colour job he did on my hair a couple of months ago.

8. I get mine cut at the el cheapo place... Bo Rics (or a small independent hairdresser)
However, my hair is straight and not difficult to cut. The going rate is @ $11-13. The last time I got it cut at a fairly decent place, it was $25-30... and I didn't even notice a difference, quality-wise!

10. Touching a nerve for me here
$25. It's a local place but it's the biggest place around - hair and nails mostly. I'd say there's at least 20 stylists working there. Supercuts and places like that haven't bothered to move into our area because no one would stop going to Roc's.

That said, I pay $25 to cut 4 inches off the bottom of my long straight hair. It's a straight freakin' line and I pay 25 bucks for it. Plus tip! Serious rip-off.

Oh and the "touched a nerve part"? My husband goes to the same place, gets his hair cut and styled, and the sides/back buzzed and it costs him $15. Grumble, grumble.

12. I go to Great Clips.
And it's about $13.00, unless I have a coupon. I wear my hair in a simple bob, just below chin length. They usually do a decent job, unless I get one of the young ones who is racing to finish me so she can be first in line to cut the hair of the cute guy who just walked in!

... but Mrs. YDogg pays about $50 plus tip for a cut and highlights. She has rather short hair (before and after). Small local cuttery with no spa-ish services. Same stylist for years.

I looked around a long time before finding anybody who was under $50. for a haircut in my area, too. I'm not really happy with the way she cuts it, but I hate to pay more (and can't really afford to pay any more, either!).

16. $25
I have short hair and go to a female barber. Years ago I used to go to San Francisco and paid $35 then.

Frankly I'm willing to pay just about anything to get a good cut. My hair is very fine with no body. If it's cut badly it looks like shit. If it's cut well, it looks terrific. I've been with my present hair stylist/barber for eons.

kind of upscale shop in the NYC metro area, very good stylist. Don't even ASK how much it costs with color.

I pay $28.00 for a wash, cut, blow job (:D) and style. I add about $7.00 for the tip, totals $35.00.

It's in a newer free-standing building. (They also have massages, but not a full spa). That includes shampoo, blow-dry, and curling iron. Still pretty reasonable, IMO.

It's usually no more than $15 for either me or Oktoberain to get a basic haircut... OktoberKid is under $10.
Their other services are reasonably priced, too.

30. Because I am unhelpful--I will reply that on color--
I have only spent the cost of product, and on labor, I do it myself. I have not had another person touch my hair in about eight years. I can not get my hair done anymore, I just can't. The people are ten years younger than me and have less familiarity with my head. I have given myself bangs on occasion, cropped it to a bob, feathered it all around, and actually cut it down to a mannish shaved-neck, cropped all-around style, which made anyone who knew me, gasp at my sacrifice--(So boyish!) and decided, at long, long last, that my hair is groovy, and I should just condition it and let it be. So I have not-exactly one-length red-brown hair right now.

I spend a very little on my hair, once I decided I know what I want, and what I need. I trim my own ends. I don't think I'd go back to a "Haircuttery" (etc) again unless I had something very specific in mind (but I have realized since that really specific haircuts are prone to growing out badly.) Long, natural, and maybe a bit naturally-highlighted, is where I let my mop be--sometimes you just need to look at your own face, figure out your style, and decide this is how it needs to go--whether it needs the regulat ministration of a beauty professional, or a do-it yourself treatment would suffice. I think presently--that the less-is-more style wins out. If you like your hair short--find a great stylist you like and stick with him/her If you like it long, spend some mirror-time with yourself and play with what you have--you will find you are the one who really decides what your hair does.

If you are getting a specific style from someone you really trust--that is good money spent. A stylist who knows you and what you want it a great thing--I never had one, and have suffered through some scary haircuts because of it.

In other words--unless you are going to a beauty school, only the level of service you are getting tells you whether you are overpaying. If you feel unsatisfied, that you did not get what you want, or that they are rushing you along, then you should really reconsider what you are getting for your price. But if you get a nice head massage in shampooing, a concerned Q&A before cutting, and a rigorous blow-out that shows you how to style--and still aren't satisfied--you may need to communicate better with the stylist. But otherwise--they are doing what they can. (Or accept that your stylist does not take good direction, if its clear he/she did not listen to instruction It's really subjective. A good stylist is worth *GOLD*. I luckily have hippy-hair, and don't fuss about it.)

Bottom line--happy? spend the money. Not happy? Find better. It can totally depend on region and rappot and oersonal style.
