Is this even legal? Re: campaign meetings inside a church.
My husband got a flier from a local Repub candidate for state representative. Apparently, he is seeking to organize for his next run for a seat, and is holding organizing meetings at his local church.

Is that illegal? Last election he had a political sign displayed right in front of the doors to the entrance.

1. If the church is tax-exempt, it's illegal.
They are not supposed to endorse a particular candidate in an election. They can support particular issues, however (such as anti-choice), and that's where the line gets fuzzy.

In 2004 I was campaigning outside of Philadelphia for John Kerry. My ex-wife is a member of a local Catholic church, and when I was picking them up one Sunday I noticed that all of the cars in the parking lot had been spammed with anti-choice, pro-Bush leaflets. Apparently this was perfectly legal, because the church supposedly had nothing to do with it.

In my perfect world, people would be free to believe whatever they want, but a candidate who professed a love of God and religion would be treated as if he said that he got his moral guidance from the Tooth Fairy. But that's just me, and it's not likely to happen soon.

2. It's legal for Republicans and other hate-based forms of Christianity.
It's not legal for anyone else, like the UCC and so forth.

3. I believe it's legal if the church is not being used as a church at the time
i.e. you can't do it during services 'n' stuff.

4. If he rented it, then it's not illegal.
If the church is supporting him and allowing him to use it for free, then I'm pretty sure that's illegal. Universities rent spaces to candidates, too, but they have to charge them for the space and make it clear they don't support any candidates.
