The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 5/21/08
"The Sickness of Friends"

Do I give off in the wee
small hours a phosphorescent
glow, perhaps, like rotting wood?

Am I in the Yellow Pages?
I am sick of that sickness
within me that so lures them

to their phones when the night comes
to a dead calm: "H'llo." It's Dick,
who can't bear to be alone;

or Jane, who needs a father;
or Spot, who leads a dog's life.
Even the operator

has twin raw scars on her wrists,
but I'm fine, unmarked, floating
in the bath of their self-love.

—Henri Coulette

1. My dear BlueIris...
This is kind of strange ...

An odd little work...

I wish I weren't so dense sometimes!

:hi:

2. Maybe you've just never been "that" friend...
It's not a good distinction.

5. I understand this one, and to an extent I can agree with it.
I was that friend for a lot of years. I was the one that everyone would go to for advice and help, and often it did feel like people only came to me when they needed something.

And some times, only sometimes, it did feel like some of it was so self-centered that it might as well be masterbation with me there as an audience. So that last line makes some sense. But those instances were the exception, not the rule.

I feel sorry for the author if he feels that those exceptions were instead the rule. I think this poem is a powerful illustration, but I can hear the frustration, exagerating the selfishness and overlooking the real need. :(
