Y'all watchin' the race?

Into my mid-20s, the Indianapolis 500 was a Big Deal, kinda like the World Series. ABC broadcast it on tape delay back then, starting at noon PDT, and on the morning of the race I'd make sure I stayed away from possible spoilers — no teevee or radio. I'd gather munchies and stuff and settle in for a 3 1/2-hour siege in front of the teevee and watch it, as they say, pole to pole.

But that was in the days of names like A.J. Foyt Sr., Bobby Rahal, Mario Andretti, the senior Unsers, Gordon Johncock, Rick Mears (and that fantastic finish in '82)... and Chris Schenkel, Jim McKay, Jackie Stewart and Chris Economaki describing it all. (Stewart had a way of explaining things in that alto voice so "Sunday drivers" could relate, and Economaki seemed to have unlimited access to pit row and Gasoline Alley.)

I don't know the particulars behind the formation of the Indy Racing League, but it was then that I started to lose interest. The only reason I'm watching this one is Danica Patrick, and she's got car problems right now.

Anyway, I just switched to "MASH."

They killed the Twinkies last night and I fully hope they do it again, today.

As a little boy I remember listening on the radio to Jack Brickhouse. That's when the race was held on the real Memorial Day.

I too watched the Indy on ABC TV. I too lost interest when the owners of the Raceway formed their own league. I notice today 3rd generation names in the race. And they still hype over and over again how the Andretti's just can't win the big one since grandpop once won and could not repeat. Today is the first time I have watched the 500 since the split because of my new 50" plasma. Missed the name Unser
