'He struck out the side'
I hate to knock heads with Vin Scully, but in my mind, when a pitcher strikes out the side, he blows out three guys in a row. He doesn't sandwich the K's around a walk and a double for a run.

1. I agree
Just because a pitcher gets three Ks in an inning, doesn't mean said pitcher does not have 5 runs score against him in the same inning. Used the way Scully used it, the phrase is meaningless.

2. I don't think he would've pumped it so much
if it weren't the kid's first major league start.

Clayton Kershaw. He's 20.

I got holes in my underwear older'n that.

4. The amount of runs scored is irrelevant. It's a simple statement of fact.
If all three outs are recorded via strikeout the pitcher struck out the side.

3. There are 3 outs in every side of an inning.
If the pitcher retires those three via strikeout he struck out the side.

I'm going with Vin.

5. It's kinda like 'no-hitter,' isn't it?
If a pitcher walks 19 guys and there're 11 errors behind him and he loses the game but doesn't give up any hits, it's in the books as a no-hitter — but it sure doesn't feel like one.

7. No. It feels like a no-hitter.

It also might feel like a sloppy, crappily pitched game, but it's still a no hitter.

The two aren't mutually exclusive.

I was in the stands when Randy Johnson pitched his first no hitter. I think he walked 7. Trust me, it felt like a no hitter.

6. 'the side' refers to the guys that came up to bat. End o; story
he strikes out the three who face him, he struck out the side.otherwise, no.
so there.
