2. wouldn't it be funny if they were mean as hell
sea otters are about the cutest thing, but apparently they are nasty and mean.

but oh so cute.

to quote a great man:

"never, ever do this to a pack of badgers..."

(trivia question: who was that man?)

4. They *are* mean as hell
I used to know someone who was friends with the panda zookeeper at the national zoo.
We fed the male through the cage cause he was good tempered but he wouldn't let us get anywhere near the female even with a cage between us..to quote "she'd tear you limb from limb given the chance.."

if I were kept in a cage.

Mean? That is their method of survival. And humans have been far meaner to pandas than vice versa.

6. They were also kept separate
Because outside of mating season Pandas are aggressive towards each other.
Solitary in the wild.
But at least in a zoo they can survive.
If not for SSP's by zoos in fact, they might be extinct.

7. That's the common zoo explanation
but many zoos sell surplus animals to canned hunts, and very few animals are put back into the wild. So basically they are breeding future moneymakers for themselves.

I actually worked with people from the National Zoo (funded by SMITHSONIAN A NOT FOR PROFIT INSTITUTE) and REPUTABLE zoos don't do that.
Most animals CAN'T go back because of habitat destruction and other reasons. Or maybe you would prefer that these animals be released so they can be shot and killed by poachers looking for magic cures from bones organs and hides?
Edit: Zoos have done way more to preserve animals from extinction than most people EVER realize.
BTW, you might want to read about the National Zoos Golden Lion Tamarin Program that has made GREAT STRIDES in saving and re-releasing one of the world's most endangered primates.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, the National Zoo has sold animals (directly or indirectly) to canned hunts.

http://www.pawsweb.org/surplus.pdf

Here's how they get rid of extra giraffes every couple of years:

http://books.google.com/books?id=5M2wVtURpBAC&pg=PA4&lpg=PA4&dq=%22surplus+animals%22%2B%22national+zoo%22&source=web&ots=bFm6hsXD6t&sig=TshBXGhmYEqtbCIfJP5bNDeUHZA&hl=en

Also according to the HSUS, "The Smithsonian has been involved in facilitating the import of endangered species killed by trophy hunters in the past."

http://www.hsus.org/wildlife/hunting_old/trophy_hunting/

I would prefer the animal be left alone both by those who seek to make money from them and those who seek to kill them for whatever reason.

For those who don't get it, the reference has nothing to do with firearms!
