It's a hard decision to make ...
Some of you may remember my posts about my old dog Luna and her falls down the stairs.

It turns out that she has cancer. I have decided not to pursue treatment options, nor further screening. She is 15 years old and has lived an extremely good life of sleeping with us, playing in the yard, rummaging through the trash, and just being a happy dog.

There is no reason to subject her to the battery of tests required to isolate what kind of cancer she has, nor is it fair to have her sedated to undergo ultrasounds, etc.

I know that some DUers will disagree with me, and I'm sorry those of you who do can't understand that my love for Luna is what is preventing me from making her go through hell at this stage in her life.

Luna knows that I have given her all the love that I have and I will continue to take care of her until the time comes.

2. Nothing wrong with that
At some point, I knew my old cat Turtle was sick (and had been for awhile and I had treated her) but at 17 I knew there was only so much I could do. I let her live out her last 6 months happy with me...

3. It is a hard decision.
I've had to make it myself and I came to the same conclusion that you did.

You will get absolutely no disagreement from me. Sometimes there is nothing more that we can do. Luna has had a great, long life and you know what's best for her. If you don't think that the potential for prolonging her life with treatment outweighs the suffering she'd be put through, then nobody...NOBODY...has the right to say differently. Nobody.

You, Luna, Little MB, and the rest of your family are in my thoughts.

4. You know what's best for Luna.
I very painfully lost my 6 year-old dog a few years ago to cancer. Spend what time you have left with her as you always have... making her feel loved.

I'm so sorry.

9. I regret that she can't sleep with me anymore.
She can't jump on the bed, and she really hates being picked up.

She sleeps on a bed right next to my side, though. I think I may have to spend a couple of nights a week on the couch with her....

7. So sorry to hear that
But I know you will what is best for her. It's not easy-I know, having gone through this 4 times in the last 4 years. You know she will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge when the time comes.

10. She has been my constant companion my almost my entire
adult life.

It really will be the end of so many aspects of life for me.

She will be waiting at the bridge with my Kobe cat who was killed last year. I still visit his grave every day, with Luna, and let him know how sorry we are that he was taken from us so young.

16. if everyday living becomes painful, I will put her down.
I cannot watch her struggle with walking or anything like that.

Right now she is still able to go up and down the stairs, she slips and falls in the early morning, so lately I have been holding her collar in the morning. She can haul herself up on to the couch, etc.

I would not be able to watch her deteriorate to a point that I thought she was in pain or sad.

It has been hard, especially trying to explain to Little MB that whatever Luna has is NOT contagious, and that she is going to go at some indeterminate time.

19. I think you made the right choice...
If she were younger, it would be a different story, but she's 15.

It's kinder this way.

When my kitty got terminal cancer, I had him put to sleep before it got really bad. My main priority was to spare him pain and discomfort.

20. It's a hard but truly loving decision. You're absolutely right, there is
no reason to make Luna suffer needlessly. She'll let you know when it's time, and she'll be grateful.
It's so hard...we love our animal companions so much...but it is the right thing, and please let us know if you need hugs and love and support when that time DOES come.

25. oh, Malta Blue- you are so wise
it is a really difficult decision to make. But 15 is a ripe old age, and yes, she doesn't need to be tortured during any more tests. She can play with my Mackenzie at Rainbow Bridge when it is her time to go.

33. thanks
She has truly lived a comfortable life.

She was severly abused before she was rescued and I adopted her while she was still a pup.

She has come a LONG way since those days.
