2. Most Italy - some Paris
We have scads of pictures - for some reason the ones taken in Switzerland didn't get uploaded yet, and it's frustrating to try to figure out which ones I haven't uploaded yet.

The stiff is Pope John XXIII.

4. The dead man is Pope XXIII (one of three "exposed" Popes buried above ground at the Vatican)
Edited on Wed May-28-08 12:44 PM by DeposeTheBoyKing
Yes, the dog is from Pompeii. Pompeii was just AMAZING.

The camera says "1/05" because the camera battery died after a heavy photography day and a fellow traveler took out the battery to see if it was the same kind as his. I guess when he replaced the battery and we recharged it it went back to "1/1/05." Arrgghh!

6. Great pics!
Most of them look very familiar. ;) And I see the 'usual' hand holding the tower of Pisa in your first there.

Where were you in Switzerland?

9. I did a couple of the "holding up the tower" pictures myself
We were in Lugano and Lucerne. We love Switzerland - the people are so friendly, the traffic is bearable, and the scenery is just lovely.

11. You were just around the corner, then.
For Lugano, that is. ;) I hope you got good weather since we had a few rough weeks here.

And yes, the 'holding up the tower' pics are mandatory. ;)

14. It was our third Cosmos trip
And a few weird things did happen to us, too. To wit:

1. Both Mr. DTBK and I took our iPods, which were identical save for a smiley face screen protector on his and none on mine. In Sorrento, Italy in our hotel room one night we decided to watch movies on our iPods because all that was on TV was in Italian. He had what he THOUGHT was his iPod, and I could not find mine. I tore that hotel room apart looking for it. I went to the manager, who hardly spoke English, and had him call our tour director so I could explain what happened. I went back to the room, and Mr. DTBK was looking at the iPod and naming movies and music that I knew weren't on his because I put everything on there for him. We believe that someone had found both iPods, thought his looked newer and took his screen protector off and put it on mine, stealing his and putting mine back in my bag, which had been zipped up on the coach - I never leave valuables lying around like that. A cat face coin purse we'd purchased in Assisi was also missing (we bought 3 and couldn't find 1 of them). We suspect that the substitute driver we had for 2 days took the items, or at least left the coach unlocked while we were at Pompeii. It was a violating feeling - we already replaced his iPod, but just to know that someone had gone through my bag was almost like being raped! Why didn't the thief take both iPods? Or the expensive Bose headphones and jewelry I had in my bag? Cosmos will investigate, but we didn't have travel insurance, and I'm sure nothing will be done. I do plan to write them a letter addressing our suspicions.

2. Another couple had their money and credit cards stolen from the wife's wallet at a rest stop on the way to Switzerland. The entire wallet was taken from her bag while she bought a sandwich, and it also had their Canadian passports in it. Strangely, the driver took off and didn't let us all go in the restaurant and look for it. Also, there was a police car in the parking lot, but they didn't tell those police, but called the police on the way to the next rest stop. The driver stopped after 10 minutes at a gas station, where miraculously the wallet with the passports appeared, but the money and credit cards were stolen and had already been used. Isn't it odd that the wallet magically appeared at the next rest stop? Why didn't the thief just throw it away?

3. Another woman on our tour had an apparently amateur pickpocket attempt while getting on the local bus at Pisa, but alert women on our tour screamed and pushed the pickpocket and she got off the bus without getting anything from her victim.

These incidents left a bad taste in our mouths. We will probably go on another Cosmos tour, but probably not in Italy.

2. I was getting some money at the Amex office when the line went dead for a few hours. Then when I finally got the cash this guy was standing there and stated "I'd like some money from (name of my dad)too!". Just standing there within earshot of me like some weird spy. Then I ran back to the bus. Couldn't find a taxi and almost missed it.

3. Other stuff too.

15. Yes and yes
It was amazing to think people lived that way, especially as others were starving. "Let them eat cake," indeed!

19. Nice photos. I remember being in the same place at the coliseum with my brother.
We're sitting under some shade trees and a group of young adults come up. One says "Ok we need a picture" and the guy he points the camera at starts doing a stupid dance. The picture is taken and one says to the other "Are we going to have any pictures that don't show us acting stupid?"
