I saw something on the way home today that really upset me
:(

Late afternoon heavy traffic, the three southbound lanes of a divided highway. On the shoulder ahead of me, I could see a car stopped. And running toward me, away from the car, a small dog - looked like maybe a Dachshund, maybe a pup.

The dog looked panicked, but the guy running after it looked even more panicked. Young, tall, running as hard as he could, calling. Absolute fear on his face - as well there should have been because I could see no good coming from that situation.

There was no way to tell how the dog got out of the car, and nothing I could have done to help. I couldn't stop in front of the dog - I would have hit it - and stopping behind it would have just meant 2 panicked people running along the shoulder calling out for a dog that was frightened out of its wits.

I'm going to be seeing that sight all night, with no way of knowing whether there was a happy ending.

1. I had an experience like that
I was driving on 2 southbound lanes when a truck in the other lane suddenly hit the brakes hard. I couldn't see why he was doing that but naturally I got on mt brakes pretty hard too, just as a large dog darted from in front of the truck and directly into my path. There was nothing I could do to avoid it and I hit the poor animal doing about 50. My teen daughter was in the car with me and became extremely upset so I phoned it in and then took my daughter home instead of to the dental appointment we had been on our way to. Horrible experience.

2. Oh, gosh! I'm so sorry!
I've never hit someone's pet - I hit a quail once and a squirrel another time and felt absolutely horrible both times. Just seeing this little scared dog today has got me totally bummed out.

I can't imagine how bad you had to have felt, even knowing there was nothing you could do.

4. I'm sorry that you had to go through that, skygazer.
I've had something similar happen as well. I don't ever want to go through it again. :(

I hope that everyone was safe when all was said and done.

5. I had a very similar situation before.
Black lab on a 3 lane freeway - with plenty of traffic. Semis swerving around him, the whole works. I pulled over and got out - tried to get him to come to me. He ran over the embankment and would not come to me. I finally gave up and left because there was nothing I could do. He ran away and hopefully didn't go back to the highway. It took a LONG time for me to get over that sick feeling though ... So I understand.

6. I hate it when pets are on the road. I cannot stand seeing cats cross the road.
I witnessed a cat being killed once and it just drives me nuts every time I see a pet wandering around on the road.

8. Here's something to replace that image in your mind
I once saw two shepherd/retriever mixes on shoulder of the highway. This was a highway with walls on both sides so the dogs must have gone down the ramp and there was no escape at that point.

The whole line of cars in the right lane was going about 5 miles an hour beside the dogs, gently guiding them to the off ramp.

It was beautiful.

10. Reminds me of the ducks by the parking lot at work.

We have a whole host of ducks by the parking lot. And a lot of times they have ducklings.

Whenever the mother duck and her ducklings cross the parking lot, I'm always happy to see the traffic stop and let them by. It reminds me of the children's book, "Make Way for Ducklings!"

11. Cool.
Maybe your city would put up a sign or something to help warn people.

9. Hopefully there was a happy ending.
One thing to remember if you see a dog in traffic is honk--they generally respond to sound better.

12. I helped a pair of dogs one time in a similar situation.
I was traveling home on a rural road with a 55mph speed limit, I crested a hill and the was a semi-truck stopped in one direction & a couple of cars stopped the other way. I saw two dogs standing in the middle of the road, a whinerwhimer & an English bulldog. The bulldog had a scarf on, they were both well fed. NOBODY would actually get out of their freaking cars to help them! I pulled over, whistled & they came right to me on the shoulder. The traffic went by as I discovered the female Bulldog liked belly rubs. The whinerwhimer was also a friendly fella as he decided to lick my face. I looked at their tags and was preparing to load them into my truck for the ride back to their house when their owners showed up. The woman was hysterical, crying and all that. She might have thought the bulldog was injured since it was lying on its back getting a belly rub. They loaded them up & brought them back home.

We had an incident down here where a man had left his wallet & some cash on top of his vehicle after filling his car. As he pulled away the cash flew & some idiot called the police reporting that he had robbed the gas station?????? The police caught up to him & his family (with the family dog) and did a "felony stop". They did this without actually confirming any robbery took place. They had it all on tape, the man repeatedly asking the cop to close the door so the dog wouldn't get out. The dog hops out of the car TAIL WAGGING and approaches a cop. What does the asshole do? He shoots it dead. That individual is no longer in law enforcement. It made me sick to my stomach & I have lost any respect I might have for anyone in law enforcement.
