May 31!

I'll be 69......................... and I'm not doing it anymore....

I probably won't be watching tomorrow's political activities, because Grandpa and I are taking our two grandkids to see a preview of the new Jack Black movie "Kung Fu Panda." Aside from the fact that China grows pandas very well, I don't see any political things on the day's activities. My daughter is going to make brunch for us and it's supposed to be a sunny day.

My mother used to tell a funny story to the people she met.

Mom and Dad eloped to Maryland to marry in April (1938). Mom used to say, "Leonard and I were married in April, and Ellen was born in May...(LONG PAUSE)... of the following year." In those days, of course, it was less acceptable to become pregnant BEFORE marriage. I was my mother's only child. I often wonder what it might be like to have a sibling.

Good luck to our Democratic Party. After affirmative action, a lot of us women were able to get into fields that were formerly completely closed to women. Hillary Clinton is eight years younger than I am. There were some tracks for her to follow, and she will also leave her mark on history. It's too bad Hillary got in the line of fire -- or put herself in the line of fire, but there's no turning back.

For the sake of the party, let's get on with it. I do hope that NEITHER the gender discrimination NOR the discrimination against blacks gets in the way of getting a WINNING TICKET TOGETHER. I believe in strength in numbers; however, if that creates dissonance in your mind, just forget I said it.

Cordially,

Radio Lady in Oregon

Peace, love and happiness,

(White doves signify peace -- I wish it to those of us on the Democratic Underground, in our Democratic Party, and on Planet Earth.)

As far as my teenage, often the matinee was carried on in the balcony!!!

Thanks for the compliment! Annette is Italian-American, born in 1942, so she is a couple of years younger than I am. She struggles with multiple sclerosis. My heritage is Eastern European and Russian, but I get mistaken for a Mediterranean woman (Italian, Greek, etc.) quite often.

So, Canada had no local live children's programming during that time-frame (1950s through 1970s)? Were you in a rural area?

Thanks for your comments.

Back to reality today...

Here's a photo of Larry King and his family. I dated him briefly in the late 50s, and then again after my divorce. He was a wonderful mentor and encouraged me; eventually, I took over his show after his arrest. He was never indicted or conficted. I am glad he has found love and laughter with his umpteenth wife!

I was hired by WEEI AM, a Boston radio station, as their first woman with a full-time, daily call in show. My shift was 10 AM to 2 PM. Everybody else on-air at the station was male, but I was finally able to support myself, my two little kids, and my Cocker Spaniel dog.

White Bird
In a golden cage
On a winter's day
In the rain
White bird
In a golden cage
Alone

The leaves blow
Cross the long black road
To the darkened skies
In its rage
But the white bird
Just sits in her cage
Unknown.

White bird must fly
Or she will die

White bird
Dreams of the aspen tree
With their dying leaves
Turning gold
But the white bird
Just sits in her cage
Growing old.

White bird must fly
Or she will die
White bird must fly
Or she will die

The sunsets come
The sunsets go
The clouds Float by
And The Earth Turns slow
And the Young Birds Eyes
Do always Glow
And She must fly
She must fly
She must fly

White bird
In a golden cage
On a winter's day
In the rain
White bird
In a golden cage
Alone

White bird must fly
Or she will die
White bird must fly
Or she will die
White bird must fly
Or she will die
White bird must fly

Edited on Sat May-31-08 09:20 PM by Radio_Lady
If I don't remember you, please don't take offense. Turning 69 allows me to challenge my memory in terms of trying to figure out what I have shared with each poster. But after 120,000 members, nothing's really working. Thanks for your post!

I met my current husband, Audio_Al, through a little ad in the Boston Globe. (Remember, there were no personal ads in 1972 when we met -- although he had signed up for a computer dating service!) He was looking for a housekeeper, because he had three 'loving helpful children' -- his wife had died of cancer at age 34. My babies were tiny -- ages 3 and 2. I have no idea what prompted me to answer his classified ad, but I did. I proposed a blind date in the Chestnut Hill area of Boston, where I lived. We went out on a blind date, and the rest is history. This is the only picture I have of my urchins on our wedding day, February 4, 1973. The rest of those Polaroid shots, as well as the remaining photos of my mother and father -- were victims of an exploded pressurized water line to our clothes washing machine, which flooded our basement in the 1990s. Darn it!

volunteer radio show went "Pfffft!" in April. You can read the whole story at this link:

I guess I could be Ex-Radio Lady, but that doesn't really work.

You're right, you know. You definitely have to remember your screen or forum name.

I could use Lady Ellen of Alpen Knoll. That was an imaginary dog kennel name my husband and I came up with. It's an anagram of both his name and my name, as well as our last name. I sound like some kind of an English somebody.

PS. Our pet buff-colored ASCOB Cocker Spaniel dog -- AKC registered as Sweet Spice of Alpen Knoll, call name "Spicy" -- was actually spayed. We never intended use her for puppies (raising five kids was enough.) She was from a breeder on Cape Cod and she didn't have the right confirmation for the show ring. Then she was killed at age 4 by a passing 4-wheel vehicle in 1988. We haven't owned a dog since that January day. She was the best little Cocker Spaniel in the world. RIP, Spicy.

Cordially,

RL

Well, if you want to, post a picture and some commentary!

My first cousins and I were born in a cluster...

Me (May 31) (only child)

Evan (June 1) (Also, his younger brother, Harrison, but I have to remember to get his birthday.)

Sandy (June 3) (only child)

Lissy (June 25) (only child)

I have to put all of us into digital sometime -- when I have nothing to do!!!

Actually, I'm working to organize photos for my daughter's 40th birthday in October 2008. After that process, I'll have a better idea of how much time it would take to do it.

That job will require the transfer of all kinds of photos (positives, negatives, and slides) plus transferring a VHS (made from 8mm film) that we did years ago. We'll try to bring it forward via digital. I'm obviously going to have to get some help with this.

Daughter Linda and her father, who died of lung cancer at age 70. This was one of the last photos I have of my ex-husband in the summer of 2006, on the Vermont side of Lake Champlain. I wish I could have convinced him to quit smoking, but was not successful. It must be a terrible addiction.

It was just gorgeous in Portland today and yesterday, too.

This is really MY favorite place in the whole world... a gorgeous summer, autumn, winters that aren't that bad, and spring that sometimes starts as early as February.

After taking off about a year when my son was in kindergarten, I was bored to tears as a stay at home mom with five kids. When I got the chance, I interviewed with WMEX Radio, a local station in Boston, and they hired me. In that job, I had a conservative male lead in who regularly berated me while I was driving to work. It was not the happiest of situations, and eventually, I stepped off the treadmill to take on a sales career. Years later, I learned that not only was I earning about 1/2 of what the men were paid, but I also did not get a free car, which was a perk for the guys. Some things never change. (Late 1970s)

36. Thank you, Southpawkicker --
Calling myself Radio Lady is done to set some of my posts apart from the myriad of others in this forum. It also allows me to figure out which ones I will put in my journal. (Don't worry, SPK, I can assure you that you are not seeing one of the three faces of Eve!)

Several people have pointed it out -- and it's a little awkward, but it also allows people to find me by searching for the subject as well as author. It's just a mnemonic device or bookkeeping thing... nothing meant by it -- Some others may disagree, but I'm not doing it to be pompous or self-righteous, nor do I feel that my sh** doesn't stink.

I have seen others do it -- or use some other "hook" to gain attention. I don't do it every time, for sure. Sometime if I'm in a big fix, I will just yell "HELP!"

There is a little band of knaves who love to do battle with me; also some who apparently feel my posts are interesting. They usually ask for information or want to know more about me or give me a little pat on the back for fighting well. So the nomenclature makes for a more vivid conversation -- rather than no comments at all. I must admit that years of performing guarantee you that I DO like an audience.

However, in the case of Bob Dole, who ran for office and kept referring to himself as "Bob Dole" this, and "Bob Dole" that, well... THAT was just nuts! Oh, by the way, I have been given several suggestions implying that my mental health is unstable and I am non-compliant with taking my medicine. Today I can assure you that neither description is accurate.

"Radio Lady here! Everything was great today, including your post, Southpawkicker."

And now you know... the rest of the story.

Here he is the night they cuffed him. However, he was never indicted or convicted. He had problems handling his finances. I wouldn't call him a great looker, but he was funny, street smart, and a brilliant radio artist. I had to fill in for him on the overnight show for four months in Miami, then landed my own gig in Boston.

Larry will be 75 years old on November 19, 2008.

He lost his TV and radio shows, and his newspaper columns. You have to admire his return to the national scene doing what he knows best. Have you heard the reports that he's going to step aside next year -- and be replaced by Ryan Seacrest?

Peace, love and happiness!

Jackie Chan, eat your heart out (he is in the voice track), and, with respect to Bruce Lee AND Ang Lee, look what can be done without the human form -- animals in motion! I think I liked it more than the young'uns.

Here's a good background story on Jack Black:

I love animation and have loved it for years. This one also has spectacular Chinese mattes and music.

But don't tell anyone I told you... review embargoed until late Friday morning, June 6th.

Thanks for your post! I'm yawning already and it isn't even midnight.

Ah, well.

There's Father's Day -- and then his birthday, June 23. He'll be 74 -- we're both still part of the YUPPIE ELDERLY generation.

Thanks for the belated post -- I called my first cousin Evan (his birthday today) in Philly and we made tentative plans to see each other in September.

That should be fun!

Cordially,

Radio Lady Ellen

Caption your picture:

Ummmmmm....

"Am I blue? You'd be, too -- if you had left without your apartment key and there were vultures circling overhead."

Your turn?

Thanks a bunch!

68. "Freed from eight years of Bush, the children
rode the symbol of the Democratic Party to a brighter future."

Not clever, but it is on my mind a lot as of late and was the first thing I thought of. :)

BTW, my pic is a screenshot from Night Watch, the same movie which inspired my screen name (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0403358/); the quote in my sig line can be found at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0403358/quotes.

66. You said, "I hope this next year is good one for you, and for all of us."
I wanted to agree and also let people see what you said.

I want to remember it on Tuesday and Wednesday, because -- blessed be -- this primary election seems to be moving to an end game.

PS. We share the lefty political thing -- but the big question is -- are you left-handed?
