I made Robert Christgau's Music Consumer Guide!
Edited on Sat May-31-08 06:23 AM by drexel dave
Sorry about the "yeah for me," but really, "YEAH FOR ME."

Enough of that. I know the DU Lounge is a light hearted place, but dammit, I've been posting here for almost three years, so...on with the press release:

After 10 years, countless performances and just plain ol' funmaking,
drexel has finally been mentioned alongside names like Moby and Madonna.

Robert Christgau, widely revered as the Dean of American Music Critics, has listed drexel's River of Chowder among his honorable mention list for the month of June, 2008.

You can read the list here:

http://music.msn.com/news/article.aspx?news=316124

And you can purchase, or purchase downloads of River of Chowder here:

http://cdbaby.com/drexel/2

Christgau's music buying guide and his writings are published in Blender Magazine, Rolling Stone, Playboy, NPR, and the Village Voice among other media outlets.

His career is massive and expansive, and highly regarded in the music journalism world.

Hint: Christgau only mentions recordings he believes to rate an "A", sans for his one "Dud of the month, which River of Chowder thankfully avoided receiving the honor of being.

You can read all about Christgau, his writings, books and commentary on his web site, located at:

http://www.robertchristgau.com

Love and gravy,

2. Thanks so much
you really have no idea the crap we've gone through before we finally got a little pub from the big boys. Getting ripped off by club owners, dealing with screwy "agents". I've got a book about the disfunction of the music biz waiting to happen.

Have a wonderful Saturday.

3. Have you read Tommy Womack's The Cheese Chronicles?
It's an outstanding tome about the perils of the music biz

PS: Congrats on the mention by Christgau

4. no, but it's ironic that you mention that
Edited on Sat May-31-08 05:49 AM by drexel dave
because the book is about "a band you've never heard of." His tiny review mentions us as "One guy you never heard of's bereft, derelict, falsetto tales of southern Ohio over another's rolling piano and whatever else comes to hand ("Big John's House," "Practicing Preachers").

And even stranger, we've been more successful NOT touring, than we were when we were playing the Detroit to Memphis circuit. I think that says something about where the culture is going, or something like that.

5. Same in the writing biz
You work to make something good, then you don't get paid when they publish it. Or you post it hoping for advice or comments, but you can't sell it because now it's public domain. And they take copyright so you can't sell your work but they can. It's a loser's game. And from what I hear the music biz is even worse.

But we love to see one of ours doing us proud. Congrats, again!

Khash.

7. Everything is centered around alcohol sales
Edited on Sat May-31-08 06:26 AM by drexel dave
and therein' lies the problem (among many).

Our fans are mostly over 30, read Bukowski and listen to Tom Waits, Wesley Willis, George Clinton and The McGuire Sisters among others.

Not exactly a friendly demographic for people who are looking to capitalize off of the creativity of others. We've got a lot of famous fans (Penn Gillette is probably the most famous), but have trouble getting decent gigs that pay anything. Unchecked capitalism has ruined almost everything about American culture.

Good luck back atcha. I started out in the journalism business.

12. I can't tell you how many times we've cleared out a room
of people who when confronted with Appalachian Soul music, left immediately.

So critical praise like this, is all the more sweeter revenge.

Thank you very much,
DD
