Who experienced the HUGE thunderstorms last night?
I think that was one of the loudest storms I've heard in a long time. Lost electricity twice. Was in the grocery store when the big night time part started and just in the time it took to run out to my car, the paper grocery bag was soaked so I had to carry it from the bottom to keep everything from falling out.

Toward the end of it, there was a flash of lightning then a HUGE, long ROLLLLING thunder that I thought might be another earthquake... that's the closest thing to it I've experienced lately.

how about you?

4. lower midwest
a few nights ago there was a tornado that hit about 15 miles from here. I didn't even know it had happened, but at about one a.m. I went to the mini mkt and the warning sirens sounded like aliens landing.

they must have new ones, or the ones they test every month aren't the whole deal.. or something.

2. They are calling it one of the worst nights of T-Storms around here
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 09:10 PM by turtlensue
in maybe twenty years. I think there were something like over a dozen tornado WARNINGS and at one point probably 15-20 counties with severe thunderstorm warnings.
I was at the docs and I could here the thunder and rain and it made the ceiling vibrate..AND I heard one of the receptionists going around making sure they knew where all the patients were in case they needed to evacuate the patients..There may have been a tornado warning I think.
Lost power for about 4 hours. Not bad when there are still plenty of people without power.
Very scary.
On edit: I am very lucky..I just heard that some people aren't going to get their power back until MONDAY and we are expecting 90+ degree heat for the next 4-5 days.

3. I experienced it too
Dozing on the couch when the thunder started to boom. Incredibly loud, it woke me up and scared my cats pretty good. Some of the loudest thunder I've ever heard.

5. I usually appreciate the sound of thunder, the atmosphere it generates
but from your description I'd differ on this occasion (although I wasn't exposed to it). Especially the loss of electricity, a certain amount of panic would of ensued in our household.

7. around here, we keep "bad thunderstorm" supplies on hand.
some drinking water, lots of candles, flashlights with batteries that work, matches, some juice...

we've had a few storms that brought down power lines and have been w/o electricity for more than overnight. Earlier this year we had a storm that started a wire fire in my yard after taking down a tree-electric lines.

6. There were tornado watches in/around DC!
One of my co-workers shouted something about a tornado watch in DC. It wasn't quite that bad, and I don't know if anywhere in our area was hit by a tornado, but there was major thunderstorms from Maryland to well into Virginia. I think a friend of mine in Charlottesville is still without power.

I was out during part of the rainstorm, got pretty soaked despite the umbrella.

8. I could sleep through a bomb. Seriously.
I have walked out the back door to go to work, and found 100 year old trees all over my yard and someone else's garage in my driveway. I didn't even know it had rained!

But I must have "selective" hearing. When my son would get up to piddle, I'd wake up the minute the splash hit the pot. And guide his little fanny back to bed and tuck him in.

9. more thunderstorm news!
for those who can't get enough of weather threads...

I found out the storm flooded parts of downtown (I still haven't been there) and I got an email from my neighborhood asso. thing that said various ppl had mystery stuff at the ends of their driveways. that was trash and recycling day here so there were all sort of bins and even lawn furniture or something that had gotten caught up in the rain and ended up somewhere else.

nature is powerful.

10. we had so much damage from thunderstorms on Wednesday that they closed schools Thursday
through much of this entire region around DC.

I've never seen schools closed because of thunderstorms, but there was a huge amount of damage, and power outages and trees down.

17. Lightning hit the pole behind my house Tuesday night.
About 100' from the back of my house. I pooped in pants. Had to find all night cleaners or pants store. It was a miserable night as the power went out and I had to bail out the sub-pumps by hand.

Fuck it.

19. yet more news -4ft of water!
water got up to 4 ft. downtown and flooded bizzes. there's a picture in the local paper today with two guys walking down the sidewalk with water above their knees!! and newspaper boxes overturned...

looks like I had it easy compared to those places. luckily I had just gotten all the leaves out of a basement entry that has a drain or else I could be using a wet vac now.
