What's the first film you remember seeing at the movies?
For me it was Herbie and the Love Bug. I ended up having nightmares about that movie and after leaving the cinema I was convinced that the blue mini that drove by didn't have a driver. Or whatever car it was... cars without drivers ... scary.

Any first movie memories?

that she took me to see snow white, and malificent scared me so bad that she had to take me home. i was crying my little eyeballs out.
edit to say i was 5. had to look that up, just to make sure it was possible, and not one of those twisted kid memories. they are pretty fuzzy at this point.

4. Temple of Doom. That heart-ripping-out thing scared the fuck out of me, 'cause I was like four.
I'm too young to remember it, but previously my parents had taken me to see ET, and I screamed my head off at the part where they have the decontamination suits and tunnels, and they had to leave.

I think after that they swore never to take me to a movie again until I was old enough to drive myself. :P

19. I had an ex who was terrified of E.T.
Not the movie, the alien himself. She had some deep, primal fear of small slimy bipeds with large heads, I guess.

She was in a department store one time and she turned a corner and found herself face to face with a large E.T. doll. Her shriek could be heard at the other end of the store.

'Twas quite bizarre.

Just within the past few days he's got over it, and watched a couple of spidey cartoons. But for the longest, he wouldn't even go in a store that might have the DVDs on display.

45. I had (well, have) a weird fear
Edited on Fri Jun-06-08 05:29 AM by Kentish Man
of Jurassic Park. That movie scared me to death for some reason, at least the T-rex did (and I was around 30 years old!). I remember afterward at home laying in bed that night thinking of the scene where the T-rex was eyeballing the kids and they weren't moving so it wouldn't eat them, and I could NOT sleep. The worst thing was we had a thunderstorm that night, and the distant thunder sounded exactly like the distant tread of the T-rex in the movie. I still can't watch it, even as a fortysomething! My wife thinks I'm lame.

edited fur spelng.

5. The Fox and the Hound
I not only remember bits of the movie, but also the oil projections they played at that theatre before the movie started - this was in the days before there was 1/2 hour of previews before the film. I remember thinking that those psychedelic oil blobbies were just the coolest thing ever, and I couldn't believe the size of the screen. A movie screen is a big thing when you're 2 or 3 and have never seen one before. The sort of sad thing is that I don't think I can watch the Fox and the Hound anymore, because 1. my general hatred for Disney, and 2. it might ruin the nice memory I have of seeing the film as a kid.

I think that's more along the lines of what he might have been thinking.

On the plus side, I really adore the films of Hitchcock, so it couldn't have been too traumatic for me. :)

Memorable, though.

But Hitchcock was the master. Amazing skill. I really think those are far scarier than the obvious blood and gore fests common now.

72. The master indeed.
I like suspense much more than horror. I didn't really see all that many films at "the movies" until I was late-teens. So I only got to see what was on broadcast tv, until then. Thus I didn't get into Hitchcock until I was an adult.

Horror movies do disturb me, and cause me to lose sleep. I try to avoid them.

I saw tons of them in Sunday matinees, including the Herbie movies (loved 'em).

I also distinctly remember my first "grownup" (non-Disney) movie: The Sound of Music. It came around to the theaters again in the early '70s, and my aunt was so enchanted with it she made everyone go, including my grandparents, who NEVER went to movies. (This aunt shoulda been a nun, I swear.) I loved the movie, and I was fascinated that it had an intermission!

I remember seeing it on a big screen. Though I don't remember if it was in an actual theater or in an auditorium.

89. Return of the Jedi
I was four years old, and that is one of the clearest memories I have of my early childhood.

I'm sure that's why Star Wars, in its entirety, will always be my favorite story.

It's been so long and I have no memories of movies prior to this. It's kind of an odd movie to be the first though!

95. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
I was three or four years old. I remember three scenes: the dwarves coming out of the mine singing "Hi-Ho," Snow White singing "Some Day My Prince Will Come," and the witch giving Snow White the poisoned apple. My mom tells me that I was terrified of the witch.

98. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken
I remember my Aunt taking me to the movie, she had just got her driver's license. I was 5 and kept going out to the lobby and getting drinks out of machine. It was one of those machines that dropped a cup then shot ice into it and then your drink. I was much more interested in that than the movie

101. That was mine as well.
Closely followed by "My Side of the Mountain." I wasn't traumatized by Herbie, but the hunter who shot the little boy's hawk in MSOTM gave me a lifelong distaste for hunting and guns.

106. The Buccaneers, with Yul Brynner.
First grown up movie. I was a toddler.

Also remember going with my big sister to the horror movies at the saturday matinee double feature. I think it cost a quarter.

Big sister was about ten years old.
I was a toddler.
As a result I was seriously traumatized by THE BLOB, THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN, and MOTHRA.
