But somehow I'm a jerk for rigging up a wire between two trees at neck-height.
:wtf:

Also, one doesn't get to use "caltrops" in conversation too often.

11. See your a-holes and raise you one. & will appreciate real advice
Edited on Sat Jun-07-08 10:09 PM by UTUSN
My street was fairly quiet 15 yrs ago. I'm 3 houses from the corner, where the street is a cross-city thoroughfare and has increasingly become a race track, with the noise pollution becoming dominant. I've done a bit to mitigate the different negatives, which is a different topic.

So at the corner, this couple has been there for 4-6 months and basically don't commit any other infractions except this: They have a restored classic pick-up that has an incredibly loud alarm. Believe it or not, crime is not a factor on this street & environs. They brought their alarm from wherever they were before.

Here's where your motorcycles come in. We've got those roaring by fairly frequently, but more frequently humongous trucks. Any of these roars set off the alarm in the classic pick-up. The owners don't shut it off, so this happens a half dozen or more times per day, at ANY time, including at 3 A.M. sometimes (or whenever). I haven't timed it, but the alarm lasts, what, 20-30-45-60 seconds? Seems like nothing in numbers, but it seems like forever hearing it.

For reasons, approaching them is not an option. Making a police report seems drastic. I talked to the Community Affairs section of the police, which advertises itself as outreach/mediation/community-whats-its, and the officer was new and didn't seem to see it as a community issue, didn't listen, talked fast, kept telling me to call dispatch (for a police report). She's supposedly getting back to me Monday after she gets direction from her supervisor.

Really, the motorcycles are one thing. Add the alarm and it's ear splitting. Any advice?

I just clicked on this thread after a day of dealing with shitty neighbours. From one dick whose dog cries all night because it's locked in some pen in his garage, to idiots letting the trash from their yard blow all over mine, to a roaring party on the next block that is still rocking my walls at 12:05am. I have never felt such hostility towards neighbours before. Anyone selling their remote house, preferably with a moat pre-stocked with crocs?

Anyway I'm sorry others are having trouble with assholes around them, but at least I'm not alone!

13. Feh. Go with the police report.
It's not as big a deal as you might think. And at least it has the chance of being on their radar.

And keep reporting. Nuisance laws are largely complaint-driven, from an enforcement perspective. They're there for just this kind of thing.

17. Check local noise ordinances
I know from experience that in San Francisco that if a car alarm goes off for more than 30 minutes you can call the cops and they'll come and tow it.

34. Update: Sure enough, the alarm went off at midnight, & I called the cops
They said that they would make the visit, but that if I wasn't willing for the cops to stop by *my* place to take a report, there would not be record/police-report.

I'm assuming the cops *did* visit. A few minutes later, the alarm appeared to be set off on purpose and turned off without playing it out as it always plays out. I'm guessing, maybe the cops asked them to demonstrate it (to see how loud it is?).

Anyway, it didn't go off again all night and hasn't so far, now some nine hours later.

Time will tell. Time will tell.

Actually, I don't know how THEY can stand it. Or is it some kind of kewl prestige deal?

21. I had originally intended to conceal a ramp in the road's surface
My plan would have had the ramp snap up into place as the offending cycle raced past, and as a result the bike and rider would rocket thirty or forty feet into the air.

Unfortunately, my pig-headed community demands all sorts of permits for that kind of thing, and who's got time for paperwork like that?

25. Oh, come now
I doubt that it would be funny if I actually intended to do it. But musing about it in a public forum certainly has the potential for spreading communal mirth.

The joke isn't so much on the means by which I'd behead the passing cyclist; the joke is on my frustration that they boom down the street at all hours of the night.
