Another hot day in the desert.

You can tell it's going to be hot before sunrise.

Five of us get in the Ford Explorer and head north across the desert.

It is a smooth ride north, past the cement plant, the Pinal Air Park.

We're going to visit my son, their brother and son, four women.

The youngest has control of the music,
remote control from the back seat.

Tire blows, panic ensues.

She over corrects, we roll.

two, three times.

EMT, Highway Patrol, Medivac Helicopters.

Emergency room, fading out

And then I wake up, in a sweat.

It's morning, time to get on the road.

I'm going to visit my son.

8. How is your boy?

How often do you get to see him?

10. We go see him about every three weeks.
Since he got out solitary confinement (SMU)
we have contact visits for the first time in over two years.
His oldest sister (my other child) finally cleared up
her own legal issues, so she was able to visit him for the first time since
his sentencing, three years ago.
We sit on the south side of an old prison building/hospital with
minimal shade and only a soda machine and a snack machine
for treats, the six of us; play UNO, retell stories and try
to ignore the fact of where we are.
He's alive, knows he is loved and shines when we are there.
He has less than eighteen months left.

11. And that makes us know how fortunate we are.
Here's a picture of his sister, about eighteen years ago.
