This is not a call out thread, rather it's a public service announcement, based on what I have read on this board.
I was a little disturbed at the risk taken by a DUer when they confronted a homeowner. It's very important that everyone know why you,
NEVER WANT TO GET INTO A FIGHT WITH SOMEONE THAT HAS NOTHING TO LOSE
I don't think the bad scenerios were properly discussed on that thread.
1) Consider what would happen if the verbal altercation escalated to a physical one. Most of the time both sides will file assault charges. Now the homeowner, many not mind a stay in jail, but most DUers may not find that sort of thing all that fun. Now you may think that you are in enough control that you wouldn't allow things to get physical. The problem is mental illness, drug abuse, alcohol abuse and the like is more prevalent in the homeowner, so there is a greater potential for physical violence What do you do, if they attack you? Even if you feel you can defend yourself, you are going to be involved in a physical fight. Beyond that, what if the person claims injuries and sues you? You will have to waste time and money defending yourself. It's not like you could counter sue or anything. Worse, what if you get hurt?
2) Consider the diseases that a homeowner may have. They include, HIV, Hepatitis and TB (including the nasty drug resistant strain). So what if this person spits on you or scratches you? What if they have open wounds or sores? Even the police are hesitant to tangle with the homeowner They will usually put on gloves and other protective gear, if they have time to do so. They can also have used needles that could be as deadly as any hand gun, if they have HIV.
3) As was mentioned, a honeowner could have knife or other makeshift weapon. It's dangerous on the streets and often the homeowner will arm themselves. With so little to lose and often having mental problems or drug or alcohol altered mental status they are more likely to use a weapon.
4) Beyond the serious stuff, what would you do if the person threw something (like a cup of coffee or their jar or urine) on you. That would certainly ruin your day and there isn't much you can do about it. It's not like you can sue them. It's not like being jailed for a day or two would really bother them.
Again I am not addressing the moral or ethical issues of any encounter. What I am trying to do is warn people, before something very bad happens to any DUer. I would also like to add, not all (or even the majority) of homeowners are dangerous, but there is enough of a potential out there, to take my warnings seriously
