I may be experiencing the symptoms of a kidney stone.
It begins as a sudden aching pain in the small of my back, a bit toward the left side. It goes through my side and ends up in my gut as a painful "colicky" spasm. It lasts from a few seconds to about a minute then subsides.

It started yesterday morning while I was on a job- I thought perhaps it was something I ate. But it's been recurring since then, and I haven't done anything physically to aggravate such symptoms.

Any one here have experience with them? How long does it typically take for one to pass? (The pain's not intolerable, merely annoying at this point.)

I guess I should get me to a physician before I start prescribing treatment for myself...

1. I've had at least 10.
Sadly, no, I'm not kidding.

I'm sure the pain can be different, but for me it feels like someone is grabbing my kidney and squeezing as hard as they can. I've never had it radiate or shoot anywhere else.

Also, if you're actually in the process of passing a stone, the pain doesn't go away. At least, not in my experience. It's continuous and gets progressively worse.

As for how long they take to pass, it depends on how big it is. I've passed tiny ones in less than a day, but I've fought bigger ones for weeeeeeks. Some are too big to pass naturally and require medical intervention.

Regardless, I think a trip to the doctor is in order.

3. you need to go get checked out, kidney stones and gallstones really, really hurt.
i had natural child birth with no meds and i'd do that again instead having another gallbladder attack, i'm not kidding.

I think i may also have kidney stone, a weird pain started the other night that reminded me of how my first gallbladder attack felt, i'm waiting on a call back from my hmo.

4. First, get to a doctor.
Second, my last episode lasted about 6 days.

Third, have you noticed blood in your urine? That's another symptom.

The pain will be more like a knot in the small of your back. Then it gets worse.

5. as others have said...
hie thee off to a physician...BEFORE you get to experience the distinct sensation of your nuts being trampled by a pissed-off flamenco dancer.

It is NOT a sensation to be desired...and drink LOTS of water.

I speak from experience...

6. Symptoms vary.
Mine included only a minor ache in the lower back, and a great feeling of discomfort. the ER doc wasn't even sure that I had a stone, but I passed one the next day with no pain whatsoever, under the influence of nice happy pills and bad Jane Austen videos. I got off very easy.

See a doctor.
