I mean, besides my fabulous birthday thread by the wonderful VenusRising - thanks to her and everyone who replied! I wish i could have responded to you all individually, but things were crazy and the internet connection was pretty lousy.

In any case, i *really* appreciated it! :loveya:

I thought some of you (ahem, DarkTirade) might enjoy some pics from the week! Others (ahem, lost-in-nj) should just skip them. :D

Slimy salamander:

Long-tailed salamander:

Marbled salamander:

Fox snake in a tree:

Pile of baby water snakes:

Neat dragonfly/damselfly shots:

1. omg what lovely lil' manders!
:loveya: I love the salamanders, I want to handle each of them :loveya: I kinda love the snakes too I think!

These dragonflies look great, it reminds me I need to get out there and snap some butterfly photos.

6. You would especially love the fox snake!

I think they are totally gorgeous, and they are the mellowest snakes ever! We plucked that one right out of the tree and he didn't bat an eye (not that they have eyelids...). They're really docile. :)

Glad you liked the mander pics! :D :bounce:

7. Thanks janesez!

I got a new camera a couple weeks ago just for this trip, and i'm still figuring out how to use it! It's a Canon S5-IS. I absolutely love it. I picked it because i wanted a really good zoom range, but also a good macro function, since i'm usually doing wildlife photos. It actually has a "super macro" setting, in which the camera can focus on something that's SITTING ON ITS LENS! :o

:hi:

20. Ah, okay. Wicked expensive camera, then. :)
I have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi and I was hoping you had one like that and a super-awesome lens I could buy to take pics like that! I want a macro lens badly.

24. You can get it on Ebay for about $250

So it's pricy, but not ridiculous. Mine was a bit more because i was in a rush and bought it at a camera store. The macro is super fun. You should solicit early (or late) b-day donations from your friends and family. :D

23. I used to co-habit with some kind of lizard...
...when I worked in the Negev Desert. It ate the ants and mossies. The caravan was so small, I'd sometimes feel it loping over me, while I was in bed.

Snakes weren't so friendly. Vipers (and scorpions, and deadly spiders and the Jericho fly) lurked out in the fields. The wife of the farmer I worked for was snake-phobic and saw snakes everywhere. Actually, they were irrigation hoses - from which snakes evolved.;-)

26. We only saw one venomous snake on the trip

A massasauga rattlesnake. Definitely have to treat those guys with respect! I prefer the little garter snakes - worst thing they do is poop on you. ;)

I'll have to read up on this irrigation hose-to-snake evolution hypothesis!

32. Water snakes are often confused with cottonmouths (water moccasins)
Edited on Mon Jun-16-08 03:37 PM by SallyMander

which ARE venomous. Not sure what species are found out west, though. The ones we have here (northern and Lake Erie water snakes) are non-venomous, but they are stinky and bitey!

41. We had the nice little poisonous ones in FL when I lived there
but I didn't come across them very often 'cause I didn't usually live near water. :) 99% of the snakes I saw there were the nice harmless little black racers, or another black kind that I never found out the official name of. They had a brightly colored underbelly, and they kept trying to go swimming in our pool. That's all I knew about them.

42. Ahah! Found the name of the kind with the bright bellies.
http://www.floridabackyardsnakes.com/SouthernRingneck.html

Cute little buggers, but not the brightest. We always had to keep the lower part of our screens perfect to keep them safe 'cause they'd go into our pool and not be able to get back out again.

47. Nah, they were usually orangeish yellow underneath.
A lot like one species of grasshopper down there too, come to think of it. We had these weird big fat black grasshoppers that would have red marks when they were young, but as they grew the red would fade to yellow.
