Are salespeople in New York City a little ruder and shorter with customers than elsewhere?
Every time I have called to buy something over the phone, if the place I was calling was in New York City, I seem to always get an aggressive, rude, hurried, pushy and inattentive person who barely seems to realize or care that I even exist. Once in the middle of a call, the guy kept putting me on hold, at least 4 times, and when he came back from the 4th time I said calmly, "Please do not put me on hold again." He said, "OK" but then a minute later, what does he do, he puts me on hold again. I felt like just hanging up but I needed the product too quickly. I did write them a letter later saying why I wouldn't be buying anything from them again but of course they couldn't be bothered to reply. Today a similar person handled my call and even though I had placed the order on their web site, they still require you to call to confirm the order - which is their way of getting someone to sell you more items and accessories for the product you bought, extended warranties, etc. I politely turned down all of his offers for all these add-ons, but I still felt like he was just pumping me for the information he needed and would hardly let me speak otherwise. Is this common for salespople in New York City? I have had other buying experiences on the phone which were much more pleasant.

1. Never had that experience with New Yorkers.
In fact, native New Yorkers are some of the most polite people on the planet.

I DID have a very unpleasant experience here in the 'gracious' South when I was pregnant with BabyMidlo. I was pushing BoyMidlo in the stroller to the ladies room and an older woman tried to push past me.

She's still reeling from the tongue lashing she got.

Point being, there are nasty people everywhere and wonderful people everywhere. It's not based on where you reside.

2. People in overseas call centers are more polite
It's rare that I get a person who's english is not that good but each and every time they are very patient and polite. Americans are just plain rude as a majority.

11. Very rare for me
Once or twice in the past eight years there's been a language barrier. Nowadays I occasionally notice a very slight accent. Their English is also much better than my Hindi

22. I like it when they tell you their name is "Steve" or "Bob" or something.
I often feel like asking where they are in India, because I'm curious and I like Indian people in general, but I'm afraid it will come off as rude or patronizing.

They read from the Tech CS talking points and do NOT address your problem.

They're dumber.

25. They're not DUMBER.
They just don't speak the language. How many answers would you be able to give in Hindi? It's no reflection on their intelligence, for heaven's sake.

26. Yes they DO speak English and they read from supplied TECH Support answers!!
I know what they do, I'm a Tech and they DO NOT know what they're talking about,
in every case that I called them. In fact, I told THEM what the answer was to my
problem or suggested the answer (ballpark) or I went and googled to find an answer.
Most times, they are reading from a script and do NOT solve the issue!

They're doing that because they don't speak the language. That doesn't in any way make them dumber, which was your claim. It just means they don't know any English other than the scripted responses.

3. Are you from the South?
The reason I ask: I used to live in Virginia (blergh) and people thought I was rushing them because I simply talked faster than they did (Philly native). It was a difference in perception.

10. Heh.
I worked in healthcare, like I do now, and I had to call the local Blue Cross company all the time (Anthem, isn't it?) and the reps would get all snippy with me. I couldn't figure it out until one day I finally said, "Is there a problem?" And she said, "If you would just STOP RUSHING through every question, you wouldn't come across as so rude!" I was like HOLY CRAP. After that, I tried to slow it down a little. :)

9. Ah, same thing.
Californians talk really slowly too. They just have a laid-back vibe that is totally different from East Coast people. I bet it's a perception problem, not that it's impossible for a customer service person to be rude, but to have a problem with a whole city's worth of reps seems like maybe it's just a style difference that you don't appreciate.

4. Usually.
We're always in a hurry.

I remember visiting NYC shortly before I moved there and visiting a buzy pizza place near the local train.

I wanted a regular slice and one pepperoni slice, so I said "One (cheese) slice," and before I could mention the pepperoni slice, the guy had already moved to the next customer since it was crowded and he was the only guy taking orders.

Eventually, I piped in, "One pepperoni, too," so I learned to get the order out pretty quickly from that point on.

Such as stealing copper plumbing from abandoned buildings.

36. I am offended. We have other things to do besides "stealing" copper plumbing...
we have to find places to fence it, too!

It's only worth what you can GET for it, you know.

:P

And liberating it from ABANDONED buildings is
for beginners.
