Any Electricians here? How much does it cost to re-wire a house?
Like, a total overhaul. Ranch style, 100 feet long with 2 car garage, attic that covers all but the garage, basement, side porch. 3 bedrooms, 2 baths (one with whirlpool bath), large kitchen, foyer, office, large livingroom.

2 circuit breakers, one in the garage, one in the basement.

*note* The wiring in place is the original 196? wiring, save for some fixes, like the outdoor box/wirse that got ripped off the house in a microburst.

Thanks! :hi:

1. To re-wire a whole house without friends who cut you a good price, it costs arm and a leg.
Hell, both arms and legs.

2. It's cheaper to buy a new house. Or perhaps a convenient fire while your away
might help... I know a guy cheap and confidential... brings his own gas...

4. Depends on the square footage...
...for a 1500 sq.ft. home, it could cost anywhere from $3500 to $6000, depending on the house and amount of wiring. Of course, it also depends on the price the various contractors will charge.

6. A LOT
We upgraded to 200amp service a few years ago and that alone was $1500 for them to put in the new breaker box and take out the old one. They then had to re-connect the existing wiring to the breakers and run the new line from the meter to it. It was about 6 hrs of work with 2 workers.

7. It would be much, much less, if the walls were open
I'm going to guess in the 10K+ range.

If you are handy at all, you might think about doing the bulk of it yourself. Basically copy what is there with new wiring, and just run it parallel with the old. You could run all the wires, and then let an electrician come in and make the actual connections.

You could save a lot of labor charges, but you'd also be buying the materials (romex) w/o markup.

8. It really depends...

I just did my entire house. If you're willing to do a lot of the work of running wire yourself...that'll lower the cost. If you're willing to do the demolition to get the old wire out and do all the the removal...that'll lower the cost. The more you can do, meaning the less you have to pay for, the cheaper it'll be. Most of the work of wiring a house is easy as long as you know what is to code.

I did almost all of it myself. I even did the wiring of the outlets and switches. My electrician only had to do some things I couldn't, install a new service box (I went from very-old 40 amp. service to cutting-edge 200 amp.), do all the 220v work, and finish the hookups of the runs to the breaker box. Including parts, it cost me about $3500. If he'd done all of it it'd have been about 200 hours and closer to $25,000.

Edit: My house is much much larger than yours. I only included my cost numbers to demonstrate how much DIY will save you.

9. Depends where you live
Alaska, Hawaii? $69,500.

New Mexico? $1,250.

Boston? $6,450 plus tax (Massachusetts).

Mississippi flood zone? Don't even try it.

Best bet - live with it or do it yourself.
