Another restaurant bites the dust near my house
I've posted before about the restaurants that have closed near my home; Sheridans Custard, (a brand new) Taco Bueno, and Moe's Southwest. The latest victim.....TGI Fridays.

I'm guessing that, between $4/gal gas and a lot of competition, it just wasn't working out. Still...not a good sign.

1. Weird. Around here
you can't even get into TGIFriday's on a Saturday night, let alone a non chain, upscale restaurant. They're all packed.

3. By contrast, commercial ventures here are BOOMING
Nobody's as busy in the summer as they are for the rest of the year (hey, we're a 'college town' with 30k students... whadda ya expect?), but this town has seen probably a 200% increase in commercial development (mostly 'chain' stores or restaurants) over the last 5 years, and everything is surviving.

The locally owned places are also doing well -- competing with the chains just fine.

4. Restaurants
I've seen several in this area close recently, I'm sure it's due to the Bush economy (aka Depression).

5. An Applebee's closed just a couple of miles from me
I'm not upset about it or anything. I'm more upset about the Vietnamese and Indian places that had to shut down because their building is being torn down and rebuilt.

8. No, I didn't pay that much attention to it
I just went past it the other day and noticed that the lettering had been removed from the building and that it looked deserted.

6. There was an Islands Burger place here and it was always busy and then a few months
ago it just closed. I looked it up on local news and the only thing i could find was an article stating that someone at HQ said that one spot was "Under performing". That place was always packed so i don't understand how that could be true. I have notices that in the past few months the TGIF, Outback and Chili's are not so busy anymore, there used to be long lines especially for Outback but even on father's day the parking lot was half empty.

10. I envious that you had an Island Burger
The ones we had in Florida closed years ago.

I don't envy casual dining places. Back in the 90s, they became lifestyle choices for time-crunched 2-income families (along with Starbucks). I'm guessing $4/gallon gas= cooking in that stainless steel and granite kitchen you paid $25K for and never use for a lot of families right now. Another business genre I imagine is suffering is the Whole Foods/Wild Oats/Greenwise type stores.
