Where would you go for you little slice of real estate heaven?
Edited on Sat Jun-21-08 02:04 PM by Whoa_Nelly
Can I please just have this little slice of real estate heaven?

Am not asking for much...it's just a tiny place.

It's near where I grew up in the summers of my life.

I miss the lakes still...

1. Oahu, or Maui.
Not right on the beach, up in the hills a little bit. Now THAT'S heaven!

Of course, I'd also accept a house in the foothills here in Colorado... That's just a different kind of heaven.

But for right now, they only exist in a photo album. I'll upload them some day, and when I go back to Hawaii next time, I'll be sure to take LOTS of pictures with my digital camera! :hi:

But i like where I am.

If I had a choice it would be the Big Island of Hawaii up on a hill with an ocean view.

Monterey is one of our favorite places to go. A days drive from here but so beautiful.

If all goes well financially, I'll be on my way with friends in 2010 for a month in Tours, staying with friend's family (acerage in said family for over 300 years) and living it up with the locals!
Have always wanted to go to France

30. Off 32 at the Butte Meadows cutoff....
Right when the road gets narrow on 32 is the cutoff. Once I was there on a Friday night, some guy comes in and goes "shit, twenty two minutes". I asked im what he was talking about he told me he was trying for the record time (19 minutes!) from the Hiway 32/99 junction to Butte Meadows/Bambi Inn.

That is about 40 miles with a long uphill climb then a twisting winding road, even moreso when you take the cutoff. HOLY SHIT!

22. This little pied-à-terre
In Berkeley, California. A mere half mil for 1000 square feet. This is actually pretty close to where I grew up. My parents retired to the country - a mistake I'll never make. That's fine while one's relatively hale, but when one starts slowing down, having the closest supermarket 10 miles away, and the closest hospital 25 miles is a huge pain.

So many cool old houses in the Berkeley area and around!

just edited:
Went to the realtor site and had a "look" inside.

c. 1926, Just preceding true Art Deco period architecture, and the interior definitely is Craftsman style

I spent several months living in this little cabin. No electricity. No running water. A handfull of nice neighbors nearby. Saloon and general store within walking distance. Pristine river to swim in. And the mountains in the background are part of Glacier National Park.

For the time being, I'll have to settle for a $30.00 park pass. :)

I spent a couple months in Alaska the summer before moving to Montana. I visited Denali but didn't get to spend much time in the area. Mostly I camped out in the Kenai and took the ferry to Dutch Harbor.

Were you working up there or just goofing off?

Worked for Denali River Raft and Cabins..was a glorified head housekeeper

Bought a car while up there and spent days off exploring as far north as Circle, and as far south as Portage (took the train to Portage...)
At end of summer, took two weeks driving back to NV, camping all the way through Alaska, Yukon Territory, British Columbia, taking the Al-Can Hwy, as well as the Stewart-Cassiar for a good portion.

memorable time!

Or in your car, or knock out a headlight, or.....
Had wire guards over headlights. Good thing those semis kick up a lot of dust and make a loud rumble...just enough warning to get off the road to a "safe" spot!
They really haul ass through there!

85. I know someone who moved to Costa Rica
She's a good friend of my brother's, and he's gone to visit her a few times. He really loves it there, but on his last trip he had to go home early because he got sick, and he thought he would do better to have US doctors taking care of him, besides the added comfort of wanting to be home when you're sick.

I think his friend has maybe now sold her place. I know that she bought two plots of land and built a bungalow on one of them. She sold the empty plot a few years ago for some huge profit and lived off of it for awhile. Supposedly they both think the new place to go is Nicaragua, since it's basically the same climate and scenery-wise, but isn't a tourist destination yet.

58. The trees were our saviors (at least that's what I'm going to believe)
we lost our entire windbreak (which means a cold winter ahead), trees from our back yard were 'topped' and thrown onto our roof and into our front yard and two trees in our front yard were up-rooted. It gobbled up our trees but left our home standing. Thank you trees!

As soon as we get things resolved w/the insurance co. we'll be replanting (the estimator from our nursery came out and gave us an estimate of $8,000 in damage/replacement costs for our trees - all were 20-35 years old - we're lucky, we live next door to one of their tree farms, so it won't take much to haul the trees to our property and replant - hopefully we can get some 5-10 year-old trees so the regrowth period won't be as long). Almost a month later and we still have timber all over our yard, it will be a while (and somewhat up to mother nature) before it's all gone.

Have been through St. Cloud, MN many times.

I do love Minnesota in the summertime!

I lived to the left of Grand View Resort near the bluff (Dutchman's Bluff) on Gull Lake.

68. I'd want to go to some remote pacific island...
where the locals are friendly, the beer cheap, the food caught that morning, the media non-existent (save for a bi-monthly newsletter), and the weather perfect. There'd be no government, and everyone would be living in a truly Atlas-Shrugged-esque eutopian society.

Sigh, I guess a guy can wish...

97. Live there already- Lake Co., CA
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 04:04 PM by kineneb
We were forced by job loss to sell our Bay Area house, and found a place here. Now that hubby has died, I have no desire to move again (nor could I afford it). But I love my house- a 1300 sq. ft manufactured (double wide) and 1/4 acre with my garden, fruit trees and rose bush collection. It is not too hot in the summer, and low enough not to get much snow. The whole area is absolutely gorgeous in the spring when all the wildflowers bloom.

on ed: not going to post photo...not going outside due to smoke from lightning-caused fires (hey, there are down sides to anywhere in CA)

That is soooo pretty up there in the northern CA woods! Have seen some earthquake activity in last month up there...hope all is good!

Maybe we can do a DU meetup sometime. I love traveling CA, especially all the north area....'course, once it's all clear and no fire again.
Hope you are doing okay with all that smoke

100. yes, it is.
I live within walking distance of the lake, and all my basic needs (small grocery and the post office). No earthquakes near here, they mostly occur at The Geysers, the geothermal plant over the hills to the south.

I decided since I didn't have to go anywhere today, I would stay inside... better than having asthma problems from the smoke.

103. Hey! that's lovely!
Isn't near Warren? Years ago the first love of my life was from Warren...he still lives there.
He's the one who saved me from drowning in a river here in CA in '73, and then later on, after he returned home to Warren to live, saved a woman from the Allegheny River. He received a Carnegie hero award for it.
