Well, as some will probably remember, we brought a new dog home last week. When I posted about that I think I mentioned that we were also adding some more kitties to the mix this week.
My GF picked them up on Monday, Reggie (a black male), Archie (an orange tabby male), and Garcia (a tuxedo male). They're all adult cats, and all quite friendly. All were fine when she brought them home.
We figured that just so Quinn and Althea wouldn't be too stressed, we'd let them live in the basement for a few days. They all seemed fine from Monday until yesterday evening . . . Reggie, who was very vocal when he first got there was acting VERY lethargic and had a very vacant look in his eyes, he also had nasty diarrhea. So, we decided to rush him to the vet (fortunately our vet is open until 8 and if you call before then they can usually fit you in at the last minute with no emergency room charges, etc.).
We got Reggie there, the vet thought it might just be related to being in a new home, eating new food, recently being neutered, etc. So, at the vets suggestion, we decided to leave him there for a couple of days so they could give him IV fluids, do bloodwork, etc. This morning at 5:00 AM, they called us and said he'd been getting worse in the night, his blood pressure had dropped so badly they couldn't even take a blood sample, and the fluids were doing no good, he wasn't retaining any of it and it just went right through the poor little guy.
My girlfriend went to the vet after I went to work, and made the decision to have him put to sleep, he just wasn't going to make it and was obviously in terrible discomfort.
I'm just very sad, and so is my GF. She's always wanted a black cuddly lap cat, and she thought she'd finally get one. We only had him home Monday night, all day Tuesday and Wednesday. He was fine when he was at the shelter.
The other two seem fine, no signs of any similar behavior or symptoms, so the vet has no clue whatsoever what happened.
 Poor little Reggie (we had decided to rename him Thomas O'Malley since he came to the shelter on St. Patrick's day and my GF wanted to give him a vaguely Irish sounding name, I recommended that name from the Disney movie the Aristocats).
It's very sad, he was such a handsome guy, he had just one little tiny white spot on his throat and he was all black otherwise. . . I never even had time to take his picture.
RIP Reggie, we didn't know you long, and we're sorry we couldn't do more for you. We tried really hard, we really wanted to give you a forever home, really. We just don't know what happened. We're sorry
