He remembered her picking him up from school each day His mom's perfume filling the car, her smile at seeing him
For so many years she was there to take him home until he became a teen
And then he wanted to take the bus, or ride with a friend
But somewhere deep inside he still missed those rides talking about his day, showing her the pictures he drew for her
Now a man he stood there by her grave In his hands one of the drawings she had saved those many years
of him, and her, on that car ride home One he had drawn in third grade
A dad himself he picked up his daughter each day As they rode home he talked with her about her time in school
Eventually she too wanted to ride with friends Their dinner conversations turned from her day to what was important to a teen
Music. Boys. TV. Texting. She was growing up, and needing daddy less and less.
Years gone by, in his 70's he lay sick They pulled the plug, and slowly he slipped away.
He smelled that beautiful scent once again His mother's perfume.
And as he left this world behind he took one last ride With his mom.
She picked him up that night and took him home One last time
The school of life was over And as they went home together he hugged her tight
Somewhere far below his daughter wept While he prepared to drive her as well one last time home from school.
