How would you handle this return to Wally-world?

I know, I shouldn't shop there but I did.

I needed a cheap pair of shoes to do yard work in so I found a box marked size 12, looked inside, saw two shoes that looked alike so I bought them. I got home, got rid of the box & the receipt. I was about to commence to cutting the yard yesterday so I slipped them on. One is a size 12, the other is an 11. I have three options.

1) Go to the return desk and ask them if I can exchange the shoe for the right one. No receipt though.

2) Wear the shoes into the store and make a "stealth" exchange. Hopefully I can find the other box with the mismatched pair and swap them.

3) Buy ANOTHER pair of shoes and return the bad one.

What would you do?

You have no receipt and managers don't care for lengthy explanations. (instant gratification, you know)

Stealth exchanges wouldn't do anyone much good.

Therefore, #3 is the only viable option.

So I don't know how much luck you'd have with #1.

#2 is just too risky - how embarassing would it be to get busted for shoplifting just to get the right size shoe?

Seems like #3 is the way to go. :shrug:


Or you could call and explain the situation and ask if they would do #1. If they wouldn't, do #3. :think:

Besides, I think I can take the greeter guy at the door. (He's about 80 years old!)

It's unreasonable to expect customers to check shoe sizes in a box before they leave the store. You have a defective item. According to Consumer Reports, they should honor an even exchange without a receipt but may ask to see your drivers' license or an equivalent ID.

Of course, basic customer service is lost on some stores these days and policies change, so there's no guarantee.

and if they do, take it up with management, remain firm.
