Poll question: How many times have you been arrested?
Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 09:53 PM by LostInAnomie
I've been arrested twice. Both when I was in my teens. Once for minor consumption, and the second time for criminal mischief.

1. There is no "0" option
I guess I've been a very good girl (or a very boring girl).

6. Anything greater than a traffic offense.
Technically though, those are counted as arrests.

36. Traffic offenses are civil infractions.
Which means the offense itself can only bring a fine. Unless you don't pay your fine and then your license is suspended and then you get caught driving. Then that's a crime.

10. Consumption is another name for tuberculosis.
For a minor case of consumption, Erewhonians will arrest you, but they won't make you serve hard time.

But seven of those were for protesting. Lawrence Livermore Lab, Seattle, the usual stuff. The other times are a testament to stupidity and youthful indiscretion.

Long story short, I was just above that magical age of 18, she was just under, and there wasn't a problem until all of a sudden her parents decided that they didn't like me.

But it was still cuffs and back of the squadcar kind of a thing.

At least, PC is what they called it.

Oh, and "knock wood" btw.

... with a group of people when the police wanted us to help them track someone down.

Other than that, no arrests anywhere. Or criminal convictions.

I can thank the good ole boys of bumfuck, Mizzery. I got arrested in a McDonald's parking lot for getting into a 15 second scuffle with a couple friends. It was literally no longer than 15 seconds, no punches were thrown, we broke it up of our own accord, and there was no fighting going on when the 5 cop cars swarmed the parking lot. A cop knocked on my door, I rolled the window down a bit, and I asked him three time, "What's the problem, officer?". When I got out of the car (once I realized that he was ordering me out) I was immediately placed under arrest, thrown against my hood and handcuffed. Thank you, Mizzery fuckwads and stupid fucking soccer mom bitch that felt afraid (but conveniently left before the cops arrived). Fuck you all. My friend almost got raped by a murderer while we were in jail.

In case you can't tell, I'm a little bitter.

22. once. it was about a fuckwad dog catcher
who was trying to take my Lab who was obeying me. I wouldn't let him, so he called the cops and had me arrested. The judge threw it out.
That was in NN, VA back in the late '70's when the shipyard was striking and all the cops were on call at the docks, but they had time to arrest me!

32. true! that can be some dangerous shit
I've never been arrested, but I'm sure most of the times I've come close were times that I was on tour with my band. There was one time in Minneapolis that I just knew I was going to jail. Somehow I was let off with almost no questions asked... this was after getting pulled over moving my car to load in gear from the club we'd just played at. My band-mate and the sound guy were both standing on the corner watching it happen. They also thought that I was going to be arrested. Thank god I wasn't.

25. Just once. Iraq War protest
Edited on Mon Jun-30-08 02:32 AM by Downtown Hound
I refused to leave when the nice officer told us to. You know, one of those, "I'm declaring this an illegal assembly, if you do not leave you will be arrested" things. I was already rather annoyed with the police for some storm trooper tactics they'd been using throughout the day, so I decided I wasn't going anywhere. I spent about eight hours in jail before they cited and released me. A few weeks later the D.A. dropped all the charges because they really had no right to tell us to leave. We weren't blocking traffic, we weren't being violent, we really hadn't done anything except walk down the street on the sidewalk, away from the designated protest route.

Nevertheless, the cops began arresting anybody that tried to cross the street, even in the freakin' crosswalk, and it was all downhill from there. Tempers flared and chaos soon took hold. Eventually it actually became a game with some of the protesters actually taunting the cops by running across the street in certain areas ahead of where they were. There is nothing more comical than watching a bunch of burly cops in heavy riot gear trying to chase after quick-moving, limber protesters that have no armor. Think Darth Vader trying to catch a chicken, and you have the idea. I think that's one of the things that pissed them off so much. They looked like idiots, and they knew it.

I did feel sorry for one of the cops though. At one point the cops made a line and stopped us from going any further. One of them was a middle aged woman, and she literally looked like she was about to cry when all of the protesters approached them and started venting their anger. There were hundreds of us and only about twelve of them. It must have been very scary for them, and looked like it took all of her willpower to keep her tears in. For all I know she agreed with our cause. She was scared and unhappy, and it was obvious she didn't want to be there. I wanted to put my arm around her and tell her it was okay, we really didn't want to hurt any of them, we just wanted to express our dissatisfaction with our government and the fact that we always had to protest in a very restricted and orderly manner.

Jail wasn't so bad, because I had many other revolutionaries there with me. I would do it all again in a hearbeat. But I'll never forget that terrified look on that police woman's face. It was a reminder to me that no matter what differences we have with our supposed enemies, underneath it all we're all human beings with fears, doubts, loves, hopes and dreams. It was a reminder to me of why I was there protesting in the first place. For peace and love, not hate.

26. Never been arrested. Came really close once . . . .
trying to get away from some 'fag' bashers who were chasing my car. I pulled out of a parking lot squealing tires directly in front of a patrol car. I only missed it by about a foot. The cops chased me and pulled me over. So did the 'fag' bashers. The creeps were shouting vile derogatories at me and the friends who were with me. Cops didn't do anything even when the FBs started shouting they were gonna follow us and murder us. I finally said to the cop "fuck this!!! I'm leaving!!! Maybe you can chase me and protect me from those morons!!!" He let me GO!!! I knoOoOoOWWW!!! How strange is that??? I was a mere eighteen years old.

27. Never
Although I did once have a warrant out for my arrest entirely due to a paperwork mishap in a county courthouse in which they thought that I hadn't paid a speeding ticket (the only one I've ever gotten, FWIW) on time.

(I like to tell that story, just 'cause I've basically always been a goody-goody and telling it makes me feel like I have an "edge." haha)

28. Surprisingly, never.
Considering that my tendency to mouth off to authority figures does extend to cops (it does not help that our local cops seem to have a high douchebag to human being ratio) this is rather fortunate.

29. Once
Bounced a check.

For $21.

For a round of mini-golf for three people.

Came up two years later in that terrible summer when, with suprising swiftness, my marriage and life fell apart. Her parents (may they meet Jesus, soon and via a flaming bus wreck) pulled a bunch of shit with the authorities (real nice feeling have a letter from Child Protective Services saying that, hey, we're not negligent parents after all), we decided to leave the state and maybe work on things without them around. My ex fled to Minneapolis with the kid while I stayed to pack. When they saw the moving truck they called the police and told them about the old warrant.

Unless you really think that a mere 7 hours after I park a U-Haul on the front lawn a sheriff's office across the state decided to fax a copy of my warrant to the local fuzz, time-stamped at 4am?

I spend 4 hours in a cell, exhausted from the combination of loading the U-Haul all by my lonesome and a really bad summer cold.

As soon as the courts opened, my bail or bond or whatever was set at $100. I had $40. One of the local deputies offered to go to the ATM for me to get the cash that I needed. That is how blatant the whole hold-up attempts was. They knew it was bullshit.

I had the truck loaded five hours after I walked the single block back from the jail to my house and was gone that afternoon.
