Laptop question
I've been having problems with my laptop recently. The sound will skip and get stuck like a broken record and the laptop will go through periods of severe lagging. I've run Norton and two different spybot defenders and it still does it. Any suggestions as to what it could be?

1. Just a guess..
Maybe your sound files are fragmented? Can't hurt to run Defrag.

2. Sounds like you've got something hogging your system processes.
Do you have Norton running all the time?

3. If there was ever a resource hog, it's Norton.
It's like the Windows Vista of PC security. :P

6. i couldn't for while
I just moved in Decemember and just recently got internet access. Because I couldn't check for updates, it wouldn't run. To clarify, it was doing the skipping before December when I did have internet access. As soon as i got it this weekend, I updated and ran every shield I had.

12. Do you have an email client that you leave running?
I found that if I let too many emails pile up, it slows down my system whenever it checks the mail and therefore has to add things to the rather bloated database of emails that I left sitting in that folder. So I started archiving my old mail in a seperate folder. :) Immediately solved the problem.

7. Could be your sound card, the drivers for the card or malware

What spybot defenders do you use? If you tell me your operating system, I can tell you how to do some basic checks of the first two. If you are running XP and you know when this problem happened, you can try system restore to roll the computer back to before it all happened.

8. Spybot Search and Destroy
as well as Spysweeper.

I've got Windows XP and I think it actually started last summer, it's only just gotten really annoying and constant.

9. The two best free spyware/malware removal programs are

Spyware Doctor Starter Edition

and the Free version of

Malwarebytes Anti Malware:

I have found Spybot Search and Destroy no longer all that effective. The other one isn't too bad.

You might also like to run this program to clean up your registry and make things run a little better.

Now with windows XP you can check on the status of your sound card by going to Start>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>System>Hardware Tab>Device Manager Look for any yellow explanation points or red Xs. If this looks good try going to your laptop's manafacturers website and downloading and installing the latest drivers for your system's sound card.

11. You could also check to see if it's overheating - the fan may be going bad
You can run system diagnostics by pressing F12 during the boot (on my Dell, at least, that's how it works)...
