Need cat help! My wife is trying to rescue two...
...who have been abandoned in the park near where she works in Manhattan. She thinks they're about two years old. She's been bringing them food, etc. We've already taken three strays in ourselves, and can do no more. She's been in contact with New York's animal rescue people, and they all say the same thing: If you can corral them, don't take them to a shelter. Obviously, this is good advice. We know what happens in shelters. I'm trying to find a home for two cats abandoned in a park, but I don't know what to do. So I turn to DU. Any thoughts?

1. Try searching Petfinder.com, etc for cat rescues
They may be able to help you.

Good luck.

3. Some organizations will lend you a live animal trap.
You can bait it with food. You might get another animal or two before you get the kitties, though. I'd put a sign on it, explaining what you're trying to do, so someone doesn't take it.

I know that New York state-based North Shore Animal League has a national reputation and presence. They might be able to help you.

Thanks for helping kitties! :hi:

4. Also, you should cross-post this in the pets forum here on DU.

5. how people-shy are they?
if they're feral, it will be hard to find them homes, though all the previous suggestions have been very good.

The alternative is to catch them, have them spayed/neutered (and if one or both are girls, be prepared to pay a bit for the girls to be boarded while their stitches are healing) and re-release them. Honestly, if they're wild, it isn't the easiest life, but one they know and your wife can always continue to feed them a few times a week so they don't become too dependent ... you can help them w/o incorporating them into your home.

However, if they are tame, do try petfinder.com. You can still have them 'fixed' and continue to feed them; spaying and neutering removes a lot of stress from their lives and of course cuts down on overpopulation.

6. Take photos of them and make an advertisement for adoption. Then
put them up at all vet offices. That is how I found a home for an abandoned cat (though I fixed him first which I think helped).
