8. Aaaah!
Chameleons, Gene Loves Jezebel, Shriekback, Scruffy the Cat, Winter Hours, Translator, Psychedelic Furs, Replacements, Magnolias, Husker Du, Lone Justice, Jason & the Scorchers...

Good call on Dream Syndicate. I saw Steve Wynn on his first solo tour in 1990, on a bill with Concrete Blonde and the Sidewinders. Best $8 I ever spent!

14. I don't even know some of those bands.
I'll have to do some research.

We should start a 1980s "college" music thread. Perhaps allow a bit of early-90s as well.

I absolutely LOVED Shriekback. And Husker. And the Furs.

48. I love my '80s rock
Chameleons: Echo & the Bunnymen style post punk
Gene Loves Jezebel: Dancy post punk
Scruffy the Cat: Jangly rockabilly/cowpunk/early alt country
Winter Hours: Moody jangle pop, similar to early REM
Translator: Sparkling alt pop with new wave, psychedelia, and Beatles influences
Magnolias: Like the Replacements? You'll like their Twin Cities neighbors
Lone Justice: Dolly Parton fronting X. Very cool cowpunk and roots rock
Jason & the Scorchers: Hank Williams joins the Ramones

If Beethoven is the Beatles and Mozart is the Stones, then Bach is the Kinks.

39. SPDIF = Sony/Philips Digital Interface. It is simply a coaxial digital audio
output. And I will add to this by mentioning that the digital audio output developed by Toshiba is known as Toslink.

OK, I feel sufficiently geeky now.

51. Digital Audio
Digital audio sounds better than analog audio does. I didn't believe this until I heard it myself. If you have an S/PDIF outlet on your motherboard, you can use a digital cable to connect it to your sound system - assuming your sound system accepts digital input. And you will hear the difference, too.

I don't know why this isn't more commonly known. Maybe it's because digital cards are cheap and analog cards are expensive. You pay $100 for an Audigy card but only $20 for a digital card. You can use the pricey Audigy card for its digital output but you won't be using any of that fancy analog circuitry. The point about digital is it's all-or-none. Price doesn't matter. If you get it at all, you get the same high quality as everyone else. Maybe that's what they don't want you to find out.

S/PDIF is hugely under-rated.

22. 1) The land we all live on -
- Most people just pass over the land they live on without seeing it, only the bits of man made habitat that is built ontop. (I said Land but really it could be watersheds and ocean too)

2) Public Libraries - I am guilty of under appreciating these (despite my love of books) for most of my life, I've recently "rediscovered" them.

3) The value of not owning things - Not many people have figured out that often the more you own (once your needs are met) the less free and happy you are.

4) Science, Logic, critical thinking

5) Science Fiction Literature - Some really great stuff out there folks, don't let the 'science' part scare you :) And it's not just Fun - although much of it is and even the 'serious' stuff can be fun on some level - it is really a good way to bring out and highlight important issues and ideas about humanity and society.
