3. August 15th!
I was told to email the link to the site I want it ordered from and the rest will be taken care of.

Funny story - I was JUST talking to GOPisEvil about this on the phone. He said (joking ... he knows the other person involved) "Just don't tell me that it's going to have to be paid for with sexual favors" to which *I* replied not to worry, I wouldn't TELL him. lol Anyway - he (GOPisEvil) is going to be here visiting the week of my birthday, and I joked that the other person might be stopping by and ... "Sorry about this Dave but, you'll be sleeping on the living room futon tonight." to which he replied..."......but..that's where the TV will be! HEY YOU TWO KEEP IT DOWN IN THERE!!!"

 Maybe you had to be there ... but that was freaking hilarious!

He is teh funneh! :loveya:

5. Thanks!
:D

Yes, Dave cracks me up. One of the many things I <3 about him. That AND his complete and total lack of jealousy. He's pretty cool - I think I'll keep him. :D

to help the poor or one of the many 250,000+ homeless veterans in the country. Or just watch some kickass college basketball on espn this fall.

7. True.
But I DID do "time" for a year (last year) completely supporting a recovering addict from the street (that I didn't know before she moved in with me) while trying to help her get her shit together and I get full blown digital cable w/ all the movie channels for a mere 15 bucks.... and I want this tv SO BAD I've been whining about a new tv for a YEAR. Can't afford it though. Can't afford much of anything anymore ... and I rarely leave the house, so this tv will rock my WORLD (and allow me to FINALLY use my home theatre pc that's been sitting unplugged in the living room for close to a year now)

So while I'm not completely selfless ... I'm not totally selfish either. ;)

I've been researching these damned things for a long time - and that is, bar none, the one I want. It's niiiiice. I am very, very fortunate it's even become a possibility of reality!

10. That is a sweet looking tv.
Mine's just a hair bigger, but it's much bulkier looking, which has an unfortunate room-dominating effect.

Movies are amazing on a screen that big. Sports too. Hockey in HD is something else.

11. OOOooooh. Hockey!
Edited on Wed Jul-16-08 12:21 AM by Madrone
I didn't think about hockey! Awesome!

We don't have jack for HD channels yet. In fact, none at ALL - publicly available. We did just turn up Fox Sports HD the other day, ESPN is next, then I think they're working on WGN and Hallmark. I'm waiting for the MOVIE channels. Anyway - I'm not complaining because I only pay $15 for cable. ;) I suspect I'll get the HD boxes for free too - since I'll be considered a "Tester". Working for the company has advantages. My AV receiver does upconverting to 1080p ... so that should significantly help the SD broadcasts. What I'm MOST excited about (pending the arrival of the tv) is hooking up my home theatre pc! I can't WAIT to sit on the couch and surf the net on that badboy! GOPisEvil bought me an INCREDIBLE wireless keyboard/mouse combo a loooooooooooooong time ago in anticipation of my getting my entertainment network set up. I haven't even taken that out of the box yet :)

Yeah - didn't you get a KILLER deal on a 65"? I've had my heart set on these because of the LED technology - lower power consumption and no need to replace bulbs at $300/pop. 61" is really HUGE for me and will dominate my living space in the current domicile, but for some reason the new models start at 61" and go up. Last years models start at 50" - but they have some bugs that I want to avoid by going with the latest - so that means a 61 is the smallest I can get.

If I have any HD tv questions I'll hit you up ... or Leftykid. lol

13. Yeah, I got the 65" for $500.
LeftyKid's got that thing figured out. The other day he was asking me why I only have the cable box hooked up by component video. I explained that we only have one HDMI input (where did he even find out that's better? He's seven!) and he told me that we can probably get something to fix that at Fry's.

He's probably right.

My mom says now I know what talking to me as a kid was like.

14. Your son is an utter freak.
And I mean that as a high compliment! Must be the lack of protein in his diet ... or something. ;) For $500 you would have been nuts not to buy it! That deal is CRAZY. If you want to drop more money I highly recommend an AV receiver. Many of them upconvert, and have HDMI ins and outs. As for getting something to fix that at Fry's, he is right. You can get what's basically a "switch" for HDMI. YOu can plug in a number of devices, and have one out to the tv. You just have to choose what device on the "switch" you want to watch and you're in business. I don't even think they're very expensive.

16. He is.
The funny thing is, back before he was born I managed an electronics store, for a certain chain best not mentioned in GD. ;) So I do have a pretty good idea of what's up, if not much current information, since I've moved on to other things. But geez, that kid runs rings around me.

I figured there was probably a switch. I had a pretty cool one before, but not HD connectors, so I gave it away when the standard TV died. I'll take a look at receivers too, but that would probably be overkill for my needs and budget, though being able to upconvert regular signals would be really cool. I'm pretty lucky in that my cable service does have a fair number of HD channels, at least.

17. My boss (2 of them, actually) got receivers similar to mine.
They only upconvert to 1080i but still ... that's really "good enough", and they only paid $379. The nice thing is they upconvert everything from composite video on up. I haven't tested any upconverting because the most modern connector my current tv has is SVideo, but my boss has used his and is really happy with it. I'm bad for the people I work with - I find all the cool stuff they didn't know they wanted - then they spend their money on them. I've been on the TV/HTPC/new receiver kick for a long time - none of them had ANY interest. Now most of them have new tvs and av receivers and I'm still doing without. It's kind of funny, actually.

I'm going to bed, but if you're interested in information about some receivers let me know and I'll PM you some stuff in the next couple of days.(I spent months and months and months researching them until I figured out which one I wanted - which I bought when it went on a ridiculously low-priced sale (saved $500). Even though I really wasn't wanting to spend money then I couldn't pass up the deal so I snatched it. The one my bosses got is a slightly lower-end model then mine, and discontinued so it got knocked down even further. Normally a $1000 receiver, $379. They are Yamahas.

15. Question.
What kind of sound goes with a TV like that?

Does it have speakers, or do you have to by a sound system with it?

I'm an utter idiot with all this newfangled stuff.

18. They have speakers.
I think everyone complains about the built in speakers and recommends hooking up a home theatre though. I can't speak to that because I've never been that close to one and/or listened to a similar television with just the built in speakers. I've been running my CRT tv through a receiver for years too - so I prefer the richer sound that gives.

The short answer to your question, though, is that you don't have to buy a sound system to go with it. (although you may like it better if you did)
