Anyone here driving a new Honda CRV?
I think my Fiancee and I have come to an agreement about a car for her(us)

1) It is small and efficient

2) It has 4 wheel drive

3) It can tow my very small sailboat.

So, does anyone here have one and care to share their thoughts?

We are going to go look at one in a few days, and drive it, and make our decision.

We are also going to go look at the Toyota Rav 4.

6. Test-drive a 2005 or 2006 model too
They changed the design in 2007. Less cargo room than the previous design due to the curved roof, but a few more features, and it seems to be quite popular.

My point is with the 05 or 06, you can still get an amazing SUV with great gas mileage for a lower price. Don't get anything older though--starting in 05 you get all of Honda's safety features, even with the LX model.

And whichever design you go with, carefully consider whether you get the LX or EX. The EX costs about $3K extra, but do you really need 4-wheel drive? Use edmunds.com to compare the two.

PM me if you want to know more. We have two CR-V's and love them.

11. Only if I can find a CPO one
the one thing I hate more than new car salesmen, is used car salesmen...At least the CPO one will be at the Honda dealer, and covered under warranty.

15. Oh yeah, that reminds me....
Don't get the extended warranty. Not a good cost-benefit on the CRV, they're made too well :)

I got one on mine, then after I did some research, and posted on the edmunds CRV forum, I rescinded it.

For salesmen, you can always take the Consumer Reports route. IIRC it costs $12 but worth it.

17. The nice thing about the CPO cars
Edited on Tue Jul-22-08 12:13 PM by jasonc
is, last I checked anyway, they come with a 100,000 mile extended warranty for free.

That is a huge incentive.

edit: however, since I plan on keeping it for a very long time, I think it would be dangerous not to get the extended warranty.

20. Oh, me too (keep for a long time)
It's just that Hondas are built so dang well, the chances of a major repair are tiny.

But I can see where it would be a good "peace of mind" insurance policy.

7. Small efficient Honda SUV with a 4wd option?
Gotta get an Element!

My wife drives a Kiwi Green 2007 (2wd) and we both love it!

But it is a whole different vehicle than the CRV. No Carpet, waterproof seats, rear seats fold up to allow for major cargo capacity. We average 24mpg mixed city and highway. It's rated a Low Emission Vehicle.

Besides, it's cool to drive a green toaster!

22. Has she had someone on a lot show one to her?
A friend of mine sells Hondas, and has sold more Elements to women than to men. He says they always say "oh, it's ugly, I hate it, etc. (and that included ME, initially)," but when they see what it can do (especially the interior configuration options), they LOVE it.

CRVs are great, too, but go check out an Element in person with a sales person to show you what it can do; it's really worth considering.

As mentioned, my wife drives the Element, which is an LEV.

I Drive an 06 Honda Ridgeline, which is rated a ULEV (Ultra...)

We just bought them too early to get the tax credit!

16. When was that added?
I got all excited when doing my 2004 taxes when I saw "low emission" on the form 1040, but it turned out the deduction was only for electric cars, or state taxes in California.

Was there a new deduction since then?

13. I have a 2002 CR-V EX
Edited on Tue Jul-22-08 12:00 PM by supernova
And I love it. :D

I bought it from the previous owner in 2006 who had only put 16k miles on it.

The best thing about it is the great sound system, the cargo space, the mileage (I can get about 30ish with hypermiling tips) and the fact that it only needs maintenance. I just recently took it for its 30k mile service.

I'm very sure it will last me for 10 years or more.

edit: CRVs ride really well too, like a much bigger car.

24. That's what I have and I love, love, love it
I like it best of all the cars I've owned. I previously had a 91 Camry that I thought was the best car ever but I like the CRV even more. The cargo hatch in the back is great for schlepping the dogs around, the mileage is good, it's comfortable and I think it's an attractive vehicle. Don't like the way they did the hatch on the newer models. It raises up in one piece instead of the hatch opening sideways with the option of popping open the back window.

28. the only thing I wish I had, and I suppose I could get retrofitted,
is a fold-down arm rest. On a long drive it's really nice to be able to rest your elbows. I should look into that the next time I take it in for an oil change. I've only got 35k on it and I'm hoping to make it last for another 10 years so it might be a good investment.

But check edmunds.com to be sure. If it's not there, lemme know and I'll look it up on CR for ya (we have a subscription).

19. i have a Subaru Forester and I like the small SUV's
pretty good on gas mileage and the all wheel drive is a major advantage (I do go off paved roads and in snow/ice here and there).

the Forester is supposed to be able to tow 2400 pound trailer.

But it's a couple years old. Don't think it's 4WD, either. She loves it, and her husband pulls a small trailer with it from time to time. Nothing too heavy. I've kind of given you half-ass answers here, but it's better than no-ass answers.

the CRV is underpowered as is, and would be not be a good tow vehicle.

I need to go drive one and make that determination on my own.

Do any of you that own one think it is underpowered?

32. Well I don't think so, but then I'm not towing anything
165 hp is enough for me. If you need more, you'll have to go with a Forrester, or the RAV4 with the V6 option. But your MPG will go down.

Toyota does not recommend towing with the 4 cylinder RAV4, but the V6 model is rated to tow 3500lbs.

Tow weight wouldn't really be a factor...
