27. Its funny how people think their TV shows only existed in one time.
I've met lots of boomers and older who think young people have never heard of old shows. Don't they know about reruns?

8. I am old enough to know *why* it is funny
But not old enough to find it *actually* funny.

The idea of a man hitting his wife just never made me smile.

16. oh...
He never hit her. Good lord - that would have meant skin contact in a time when couples on TV slept in separate beds.

He would say "to the moon, Alice" which seems to have been replaced with the "fuck you"s that I hear now.

20. Yes, I do
Jackie Gleason.

While the idea of a man punching his wife does make me wince, I loved her response even more. The real joke was that one look from Audry Meadows, herself a formidable preseance, was all it took to completely melt him.

33. It was *because* it was an empty threat that it was funny.
If she'd even acted in the least bit frightened, it wouldn't have been funny. Alice was obviously the brains in that outfit: he was a posturing blowhard, and Alice could see right through him. If he'd actually hit her, that would have been disturbing, and not in the least humorous.

Besides, Alice would have taken him to the cleaners, and rightly so.

Growing up in Conn., we got Ch. 11 in NYC, which reran The Honeymooners almost as incessantly as TV Land does Sanford & Son at present. :eyes:

And ya know, growing up in a somewhat abusive household, and being verrry verry young at the time, I still knew the difference between what Ralph was doing on the teevee and the 'real thing.'

42. Just watched one the other night.
Ralph got laid off, and nobody would hire him because they knew his layoff was temporary. Alice got a job instead, but the company HAD A POLICY OF NOT HIRING MARRIED WOMEN, so Alice had to lie and say she lived with her brother, Ralph. The comedy of the episode came because her boss kept hitting on her, and Ralph had to control his temper and keep up the facade, so she wouldn't lose her job.

What a difference a few decades make...

The standard of living was something, too. I know he was a bus driver, but the Kramdens never even owned a COUCH. :)
