HELP! Would You Please Tell Me What Mattress You've Got.
Edited on Thu Jul-24-08 08:45 PM by cryingshame
Going on a second mattress from Sleepy's. Would like a coiled mattress and not foam.

This one also has body impression after only a bit over one week. The one before this (returned and upgraded) also got body impression after a week.

I am a petite woman and not terribly over weight. This shouldn't be happening.

Can anyone recommend a mattress?

It's almost impossible to find good info on the internet rating the damned things. It almost seems like a racket, as far as quality/price goes?

Edit- if it's this difficult for me to find info, there're probably other DU'ers who could use help. If not now, in future.

1. sterns & foster.
best mattress available. Period.

You will pay dearly for it, but it will last you 30 years.

I slept on my childhood mattress (sterns & foster) for 27 years (and it was a guest room bed before I got it at age 3), spent 3 years on a run of the mill mattress, and am on the sixth year of my own sterns & foster investment. I paid serious money, but I will not have to buy a mattress again until I collect social security (if it is still around)

6. Agreed--but they were recently bought out by Sealy, I believe.
Now they are made just like a Sealy, and not the same quality as the original brand.

The "real" Sterns & Foster no longer exists--just the name brand.

2. Simmons Do Not Disturb (or something like that)
The one they show with the glass of wine on one side and drop a bowling ball on the other side. Very comfortable and DH does not wake me up every time he moves.

3. Comfortaire (two of them)
Comfortaire (IIRC) is the original company that came up with beds with air chambers. Then a couple of execs left and formed Sleep Number. Same product, but Sleep Number spends a lot more on marketing, so they charge more for their bed.

In any event, we've had a Comfortaire for years, and LOVE IT. The mattress never needs turning, has a 20-year warranty, and will never sag (since it has no springs). And dang is it the most comfortable mattress ever (others who have laid on it say things like "I'm never getting up")

Bought it from the company (essentially) for half price on ebay, in the original packaging. It had been shown in a trade show (thus never used--just pushed on or sat on), but once it had been out of the box, they couldn't sell it as new. So we got a bargain. A couple months later I bought another one, for my dad.

There's one for about half price on ebay for $799. When you consider these at last three times as long as a regular mattress, and are WAY more comfortable, it's like paying $300-400 for a regular mattress. Plus you don't have to turn it, and you can adjust each side for how much firmness you want.

Try to get one with a memory foam layer. One of ours (my favorite) has egg-crate top + memory foam layer; the other has egg-crate only (I think).

4. Different stores get different model names of the same mattress.
from each manufacturer. Almost impossible to compare store to store. It IS a racket. I remember a big expose on this a few years ago.

5. I got a great mattress from a store that was going out of business.
It is some type of Simmons. Originally $1600 for spring and mattress set; got it for $600. The chain stayed in business, but they closed just this one location
and cleared all inventory (even though another location was just 30 miles away). Try googling for going out of business sales . . . you MIGHT get lucky.

7. Tempur-Pedic. Buy one.
It takes about a week to get used to, but we'll never go back to a conventional mattress.

And no, even though it's essentially a slab o'foam, it's NOT hot, even during the summer.

Bye-bye, back problems. And even though Mrs R and I sleep glued to one another in the middle of the bed, which has created valleys in so many regular mattresses, this one is still dead-flat after two years.

I can't recommend it enough.

There are several models to choose from...I purchased one with a pillow top.

No more coil mattresses for this gal!
