just got pulled over for cops personal objections to my dogs
I was just going to the dump to drop off some trash and took my three dogs with me (they LOVE to ride).Anyways my big male had his head out the window and a cop pulled me over for it.
When I pointed out that a dog with his head out the window isn't illegal he said he *personally objected* to allowing it.Of course he ran my license then told me to *keep my windows up* while my dogs were in the car.

I was so stunned I couldn't argue with him.A cop using his authority to pull you over to lecture you on personal legal behavior.

Thing is this is a small town and going to his boss will pretty much guarantee problems down the road.

Oh well...just wanted to vent.

2. so cops pulling you over for personal reasons is ok now?
if that 100 pound dog could jump out that 6 inch hole I would see your point but it was impossible for him to fit his body out the small opening he had...he could barely fit his head out.

I would NEVER fully open the window to the point there was a risk he could jump out

3. Just curious... what kind of dog?
The cop was an asshat (obviously). His 'personal objection' may have had something to do with a prejudice against certain breeds, the way that some people automatically prejudge P-Bulls or Rotties as 'vicious', even when they're rolled on their backs begging for a tummy-rub.

to this jerkoff cop.

5. vets recommend against it
Not defending the cop, but I have read that this causes the dog's eyes to dry out and can cause serious vision problems.

10. Also they can get debris in their eyes, grit, bugs, etc.
They can hit their heads on low-hanging tree branches, mailboxes, other cars' mirrors, etc. It's just a bad idea all around.

15. Reminds me of something that happened to me years ago...
My sister had a little Triumph Spitfire roadster and I had a gigantic harlequin great dane that LOVED to go riding in it. She (the dog- not my sister :) ) would "sit" on the back ledge and her head was easily a foot or more above the windshield. We got a lot of strange looks. Mostly, we drove around the neighborhood- probably never going faster than 25 or 30 mph.

At a red light one day, some woman started yelling at us- I mean REALLY laying into us about being awful, awful people for riding around with the dog unprotected like that. I (nicely) told her to MYOB, but she continued, screaming that if we were going to ride the dog around like that we HAD to get her goggles and a scarf (to tie over her ears). The image of that struck me as hilarious- a great dane in a sports car with goggles and a scarf. So of course, I HAD to find goggles and a scarf (and I added a beret to complete the ensemble) and try to put them on a great dane (who very much had other ideas)...

Sorry- had to take that trip down memory lane! :hi:

23. Goggles and a scarf???
For riding in a car???
Now if the dog was going to climb up on the doghouse and play "Snoopy and the Red Baron" I could see the need...

9. My guess, the cop was interested in something else. The dog was a cover story.
I've once been pulled over for doing 55 in a 55, and twice for having a working turn signal.

13. When I was 20
I had hair down past my shoulders, drove a red sports car, and had an Impeach Nixon sticker on the bumper. I used to get pulled a lot.

17. You should have told him that you *personally objected* to your dog's appetite for pig meat.
But, there wasn't really a damn thing that you could do to break him of it.

My dogs and my kids love to do things that aren't good for them. I, as the adult, prevent it.

24. That's bullshit
What is he? A cop on Animal Planet? They have jobs to do and it's not animal control. That is harrassment, plain and simple.

I'm as big a dog lover as anyone and I let my dog stick her head out of the sunroof. She loves it. We go 15 min to the store at 35-40 mph. Yeah, I know there's a risk of something getting in her eye but, please. Some people go completely overboard on shit.

Thank god I don't have any children...I might let them ride a roller coaster without goggles! And a boat? Oh jesus, a log could fly up and hit them in the head! Better put a full face helmet on them. I guess motorcycle riders should never ride without goggles or a shield too. :eyes:

25. Keep driving with your windows down. Carry a video camera. After three stops,
hire an attorney.

(Even though you really shouldn't let your dog ride like that. What if he takes a bee to the eye at 50 MPH?)

26. In our state, dogs must be restrained in a car.
You have to have them in some kind of harness or use a barrier. I don't think they enforce it much though.

a cop pulled him over for it. Doctors say smoking is bad for us too. Does that mean they can pull us over for it?

29. Humans know smoking is bad for them
Dogs don't know what's bad for them, so their owners have to take responsibility. To me, it sounds like the cop was educating them. They didn't get a ticket, and they were doing something potentially harmful to their dog.

end of story. Regardless of the right or wrong of whether you let your dog hang his head out the window.

32. Cops aren't teachers
They are hired to enforce the laws, and in this case the cop was outside his assigned duties. I think he was an ass for making the stop.

34. It is not illegal to have your dog stick its head out the window...
Safety issues in this case are certainly arguable. However, it is the job of law enforcement to enforce the law. It is not their job to enforce their opinions on matters that do not pertain to the law.

That is the issue here.

36. The whole culture of law enforcement is becoming more toxic.
Authoritarian and bullying behavior seems to be much more common, and on the rise. x(

I think we're going to see a hell of a lot of problems before this finally reaches critical mass, and then it's going to be a HUGE national explosion over police abuse and arbitrary uses of authority.
