Heath Ledger was fantastic, and so was Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. Ledger is basically everything the Joker SHOULD be: an enigma, scary, horrifying, but something you can't tear your eyes away from. Eckhart plays Dent perfectly, better than I thought the character could be done.

The Joker.

Two-Face.
It was just an incredible movie, suspenseful, tragic, and badass. Hot DAMN, are they making a third one? Is there any way on earth they could top it?

1. I'm just wondering how they'll pull it off properly without The Joker.

2. I don't know. There are lots of other great villains they could go with...
but they can't have someone else be the joker. That would just be wrong.

3. Two Face - you might want to put some Neosporin on that...
Two Face is really gruesome in The Dark Knight - he's got no eyelid on that side, no ear, his lips are gone, giving him that permanent snarl, you can see tendons, bits of bone, etc.

14. Yes, it's hard to imagine him with that kind of damage actually walking around alive.
"Suspension of disbelief -- totally!!!"

4. Who can follow Ledger in the next movie?
or, will they go with Catwoman or Penguin or somebody else?

Dent/two-face died at the end, so that idea seems out.

9. Did he die?
Dent got knocked off a third story ledge and took a fall that knocked him out, though I'm not sure it actually killed him.

10. It would be hard to explain the memorial at the end, otherwise.
I guess they could do it, but it would be awfully hokie, and Nolan has stayed away from hokie so far.

The guy fell to his death in front of the police commissioner, who then euologized him. I can't imagine a plausible scenario where he's alive.

6. do you think it's the greatest movie of all time?
as the good folks over at IMDB.com do? It's been number one since the saturday after it came out. I personally think it's in a tie for second with One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest behind Shawshank Redemption.

11. Putting my flame suit on...
I just saw it. It was good, but I just don't agree that it was great. Parts of it were really murky - both the cinematography, and the plot development. What was that weirdness with the cell phone in the jail? Sure it was an unbeatable way of smuggling in a phone - not even the most conscientious guard would have thought of searching there, but he had to plant the explosives as well. Wouldn't it have been easier just to stash the phone in with them? - though it did make for a great visual, and underscored just how crazy the joker was.

The acting was top-notch, and Heath Ledger was outstanding. The gadget surprises were inventive, and the action was non-stop. For what it was, it was superb. I'm glad I had a chance to see it on the big screen, and it was well worth the five bucks I spent on the cheap matinée. But I don't think it broke any new ground.

Thanks for the follow-up.

It is shocking to have it up to #1 in the Top 250. There have been too many films that have moved up higher than I would have ever expected. But as viewers get younger and younger, the IMDB does get skewed.

I was born in 1939. There are just too many good movies of the 40s, 50s, and 60s that are missing in action in that list.

Here's my KGW.com review of "The Dark Knight" in case you're interested:

16. It depends on the generation you were born in, I guess.
I would be reluctant to say any one movie is the 'greatest ever'...I think it's unfair to judge movies from different eras against each other, because really, they all stand out for their own reasons and have their own merits.

17. Do you know how hard it is to get a signal inside somebody's duodenum?
Much easier to leave your Moto right beneath the dermis.

I enjoyed every minute of the movie, but IMO the claims that it's one of the all-time great films are an exaggeration. I believe that Ledger's gives one of the all-time great performances, and his presence certainly buoys an already pretty darned good film, giving the impression that it's much better overall than it really is.

Still a good film, thogh.
