hell is getting awfully cold: Marlins are in talks to get Manny!
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 07:44 PM by charlie and algernon
ESPN just said the Marlins and Red Sox are in talks to get Manny Ramirez. I REALLY hope we don't do it. I'd hate for us to give up two young hitters, Willingham and Hermida, for at most, a 3 month rental. I'd be HUGELY shocked if the marlins suddenly quintupled their team salary to sign a cantakerous player to a long term deal.

1. Sucks for the Marlins!
I dont think any team would really want to be on the receiving end of the Manny deal. Especially when Manny's salary is worth more than the Marlin's entire payroll.

2. their payroll would at least quadruple
I know the Marlins are in the playoff hunt, butwe need pitching, not hitting, and certianly not a hitter that sucks at defense.

18. Sox would eat much of the contract
Frankly, the Sox front office has had it with Manny and is willing to eat some some of his salary just to make a deal happen.

3. Been the talk here all afternoon.

The deal is supposedly virtually done...it's a $ sticking point, as in how much of Manny's salary the Sox pay. The Marlins want the Sox to pay 100% of it, the Sox want Hermida instead of Willingham to do so.

Marlins get:

Manny Ramirez
$$$

Red Sox get:

Hermida or Willingham
Ryan Tucker (middling AA RHP prospect...projects to a MLB 4 or 5 or long relief)
Mike Stanton (OF prospect...on pace to hit 40HRs and strike out 250+ times in single-A. A minor-league Adam Dunn clone.)

The other hang-up is that the Sox won't pull the trigger until they finalize a second deal to spin off Willingham or Hermida, Tucker and a Red Sox MLB-ready pitching prospect (Buchholz?) to the Bucs for Jason Bay. (The Sox P prospect gets dropped (or the Sox keep Tucker) if the Marlins player is Hermida instead of Willingham.)

8. in other words, the marlins lose
I like that we're buyers this year, but I hate hate hate that we give up all those young guys for a rental. like i said up thread, if we were going to buy, i'd rather we rent a top pitcher.

4. The Sox would be nuts to trade him.
Yes, he's difficult and a big baby. But he's one of the best right-handed hitters in the modern era. To tell you the truth, the sports media in this town really fans the flames.

6. He clinched it with his comments this afternoon.
Told ESPNDeportes that Boston didn't deserve him and ripped into Lucchino, John Henry, and Theo. He's toast...either they trade him now or they take the options so they can control where he goes and trade him in ST. No way he's in Beantown next year, no way they let him hit free agency.

13. Woops-I didn't know about those comments.
That is bad. I hope they get some young talent for him.

They're losing again tonight. :-(

19. He's pushed it too far
His antics have caused more problems in the clubhouse than they have in the past. Guys like Jason Varitek, Sean Casey, and Kevin Youkilis see Manny as a pain in the ass.

He got into a shoving match with Youk, and slugged a 60 year old team employee. He has burned up the good will.

5. It's only, what, $20 million/year?
Chump change. Marlins...you know you want him. And the Marlins should pick up his options, giving them 2 years.

7. Actually, they could end up being on the hook for very little.
I would assume they would get Boston to pick up the majority of his remaining salary for this season, then they can decline his option and be done with him. Declining his option would be the Marlin way.

10. But then it seems
they're losing a couple good players (at least) for 3 months of Manny. What am I missing, here?

12. Win now, I guess.
However, they want a new ball park (maybe they are already getting one), so having Manny in town might sell tickets.

14. that's exactly what it is
unless Lowrie has a bunch of money lying around waiting for a big name player to arrive, this is a terrible decision. Even if we win our third world series, it still hurts us in the long term.

15. The Marlins are in a dogfight of a NL East race...
it's as much of a trade to keep him away from the Phils and Mets, both of whom also put out feelers in the last few days. Both of those deals are supposedly dead but who knows what deal could happen between now and 4PM tomorrow in a last-ditch offer. Whoever gets Manny gets the best available hitter not named Bonds...it might be over for the other two.

It's all conjecture anyways...10am this morning Man-Ram was going to be a Dodger by noon for Kemp and Andruw Jones. Needless to say, that didn't happen. I think local media here makes shit up when they don't have breaking Sox news on the hour.

9. Sox supposedly pick up the contract (most of it at least) for this year...
according to WEEI, at least.

Otherwise he has almost zero value. Sometimes I hate living between two major media markets...I get constant updates (literally...every two minutes) but it's all conjecture and no action thus far.

16. WRKO (Sox flagship) says MLB has been notified
The league has to sign off on deals involving cash considerations, so it looks like something may be imminent.

17. The Sox better do something quick...
They're getting their asses kicked by LA...and they've played poorly against NY and TB. I don't see a Sox parade downtown this fall. x(

22. Frankly...I don't either.
regardless what happens with Manny. I think we peaked early and we got a lot of outstanding play from guys to cover for Ramirez and Ortiz having atypical seasons. Nevertheless, Drew and Youk (among others) are playing over expectations and that's probably not sustainable.

I think we have a bright future...Ellsbury, Pedroia, Lowrie, Buchholz,... That's a nice bunch of talent in kids younger than 25, 23 if you take Pedroia out of that group. If Hanson can get his head together, Beckett becomes the pitcher he was last season again and Dice-K performs like he did earlier this year...we're the 2009, 2010, and 2011 favorites.

21. Latest from BaseballProspectus.com

The Commissioner’s Office has been informed of a deal involving the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins. The Commissioner has to sign off on any deal involving cash considerations of more than a million dollars and there was clearly going to be cash involved in any deal. There’s also some formality about Manny Ramirez waiving his 10-5 rights and no trade clause and I’ll admit not understanding the technicalities.

So here’s what Pee Wee Herman would call the “big but.” The teams, I am told, have not agreed on the specific prospects to be included in the deal. It’s expected that in addition to the principals, the Red Sox would get John Grabow and give up two prospects while the Marlins would get one prospect and give up two. There’s still a lot of haggling but my scribbling notes make it look like the structure of the deal is:

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (BOS), and cash (likely Ramirez’s remaining salary)
Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two FLO, one BOS)
Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

There is still potential for this to fall apart over the prospects, though things appear closer now than ever before.
