This is one of the things that drives me crazy about NASCAR
If it rains, everywhere they race, every single weekend

around 5pm,

why....

why don't they

just start racing an hour or two earlier in the day?

1. They can't run on a wet track.

3. The tires are slick tires... no tread.
However, they apparently raced in the rain Sat. in Montreal for the first time with special rain tires. It's not too common, from what I understand, though. :hi:

2. Because none of the spectators...
...will have sufficiently recovered from their malt liquor hangovers to make it to the track any earlier?

4. haha
Actually, NASCAR has a broad range of spectators now It's really kind of sad for its original fans, too. The ticket prices have skyrocketed in years.

7. It's the same with any niche sport that goes mainstream.
I used to love watching Rally racing back when it was the preserve of certifiable lunatics screaming around muddy Welsh lanes at 120 mph in the freezing fog. You could actually reach out and touch the cars as they flew past, if you were crazy enough (as attested-to by the discovery of a severed human thumb wedged in the rear bumper of one car during the Portuguese Rally a few years back).

Now, it's a huge international business, with all the corporate BS that entails. Personally, I prefer my motorsport a bit gritty and amateurish. The minute big money arrives, the fun quickly leaves.

5. We used to start at 12:30, 1:00pm at the latest...

networks (TBS, TNT, ESPN, FOX) pay a lot of money to carry these races. A later starting time=more viewers. I agree with your argument, but it's not going to change any time soon
