Have we abused gratuitous exclamation points to the point that one no longer suffices?

I just noticed that in an email. I was reading it, and the sender was obviously excited about something but only followed up the excited statement with only one exclamation point. I thought, "Well, if she were really that excited about it she would have probably put more than one exclamation point". Then, I thought "Jesus, how far have we sunk that correct punctuation no longer suffices!!!!".
